8. Her death is one of those where were you when you learned of her death?
{Like JFK, MLK and RFK.}

I was in my fourth day of USAF boot camp when
I learned Janis had died.

Jimi had died just a couple of weeks sooner.

11. Summertime!
Named my 1972 VW camper Summertime while Janis played and played again on the ol' Lear 8-track player.

With Janis and living on the road in the camper, it was Summertime all the time!

12. thanks for these beautiful pictures
I voted for Get it While you can, but tomorrow it might be something else.

An ex-boyfriend's dad played on "Try", he was the sax player in the Kozmic Blues Band. He also played at Woodstock and it is so interesting to hear his stories of that time.

40. Yes she did.
It's just sooo hard to CHOOSE!

I had to settle on #2 because when I was working in Alaska, I knew a lady who'd been Janis's roommate when they were both in junior college in TX. This lady told me that what Janis really wanted to do then was WRITE -- as in stories, books. Said she only got involved in music because someone else urged her to and she took a stab at it with her usual style. And the rest is history.

So sad that she never got the chance to look back at it all much later in her life and write about it!

But #2 reminded me of the Janis my friend described from back then.

All fantastic photos! I guess it takes that many to capture "the many faces of... a one-of-a-kind gal"! :D

14. Cripes, I had a photography lab partner in Marin County back in 1971
She had been a roommate of Janis and had the entire negative collection from her estate. I spent an entire semester looking at prints of Janis. Many of those prints were extremely risque. Why, oh why didn't I bag a few of them when I had the chance? :spank:

Oh, I'll go with R. Crumbs rendition because he's one odd duck and I love his work.

15. Ummm , I'm not a Janis Joplin fan, although I
feel that to each his won BUT in number 8, there particular part of the "vignette", WTF is the explanation for the white lipped Mammy? I'm woman of a mixed african and everything descent, so anyone with an IQ of the ambient room temperature in Antartica during a cold snap can understand why this is bit problematic for me, considering that this is DU... UMMM, WTF?

21. I wonder why he would have drawn an
EXTREMELY offensive form of the "fat, white -lipped, google eyed mammy" icon holding the baby? This has been an universally recognised insult to black people, black women in particular as it draws VERY easily connected line to the minstrel and black face tradition in the post reconstructed south. Has anyone else ever noticed this as I did?

22. I have noticed it.
I was not offended by it (I am caucasian), but I am not surprised that you were. When I noticed it (many years ago), I assumed black people would be offended and I spent some time learning about Crumb, the man responsible for it. He is a very strange man, to say the least.

You might find it helpful to read the wiki links provided, about him. I doubt it will make you feel less offended, but perhaps you will understand the situation better.

28. i did not click on the wiki ling but, i would not be surprised if it
doesn't have something to do with "summertime" the song. It was from Porgie and Bess IIRC and he might have been trying to harken back to that era...

art. go figure

41. That was my first thought too.
"Summertime" is a Gershwin tune, and the lyrics connote the then-still-permissible image of an African slave "mammy" caring for her white masters' infant, singing to the child about ITS wonderful future, to quiet its tears....

The stark contrast to the slave's own life is, I believe, intentional on Gershwin's part.

So I voted #2. I always loved that line "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose".

Cleveland Public Arena, before rock went big time, 3,000 fans in a 13,000 seat arena, right after "Cheap Thrills" was released. Blood, Sweat, and Tears was the opening act.
