Poll question: What could Tony Blair have done differently?
Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 11:37 AM by Deep13
Tony Blair, head honcho of the UK, has been forced to leave office probably this spring. How could he have avoided this?

6. I voted
He should shut up already about meeting Oasis.

That whole "Cool Britannia" thing from when he came to power was just embarrasing.

And while I'm at it, all this talk of "modernisation" from New Labour gets right on my thru'penny bits too. Just another vague feelgood term that could mean just about anything.

9. To not have become an obedient slave to the "free market"
He was a moderate social democrat in his youth, but then he became more neo-liberal as time went on.

11. Not been a compulsive liar.
Sometimes it seems as though barely a true word has passed his lips since he became party leader over a decade ago - even when deployed for good purposes (as some of them have been), lies are lies and undermine trust in what one is doing.

Oh and when the leader of the British Conservative Party attacks somebody for craven subservience to an American president, you know that your foreign policy is somewhat out of kilter with reality.

That said, should he last to late spring, he'll have been P.M. for 10 years which I think is too long. Since the last war we've had 11 Prime Ministers - of whom only 2 have served for long than 8 years (the other being Thatcher), and 5 of whom served for fewer than 5 years.

13. Nothing - all leaders go batshit insane after about eight years
they usually end up either losing an election or being forced out by their own party. Tony Blair's problem, or rather our problem is that the parliamentary Labour party forgot this. The Tories wouldn't have let him go on like this if Blair was a Conservative.
