Can anyone ID the artist who made this?
Sweetie got this antique print at an auction:

I like it alot; it's got quite an unusual composition
for an antique stand-alone print, IMHO. She looks like she
should be one tiny figure in a GROUP setting, doesn't she?
And it's a FINE example of printmaking; the way shape and depth
are defined with large blocks of black REALLY tweaks my ArtDar, y'know?

At first glance, the signature SEEMS clear:

So I jumped online to look up this artist, and.......nuthin!

The sig looks like "Leon Gault" to me, and I've tried variations
based on every other letter-combination that that signature MIGHT
be...and still NUTHIN!

Anybody have a clue?

who did a series of lithographs under the collective name '‘Les Sciences: L’Art du Travestissement’ (The Sciences: the Art of Dressing) circa the 1880's. Which that looks to be from. Here's another from the same series:

3. D'oh! I almost tried googling it as "Sault"....
...but then I thought, "Nah, there's no way that's an 'S'!". LOL!

I tried Gault, Tault, Iault...everything but Sault!

Thanks a lot! I was hesitant to remove it from its frame;
but if it follows the same layout as that example, I think
we may still have the title and etc. intact under the wide
matting. Definitely worth re-framing if all that is still
there, so I'm gonna check it out!

6. Thanks for your 'congrats' !
Discovering that it's French, and that it's part
of a series called "The art of Dressing" is more
exciting to us than the Print alone.

Sweetie is a serious Francophile; one of her degrees is
in 'French Studies'.

And we both love VintageWear; I myself have over 400
vintage neckties, not counting bowties and clipons.

SO....I'm thinking this print might be a good excuse to
throw a small party.

As I mentioned above, I suspect the actual NAME of the print
may be intact, and hidden under the matting; so I'm thinking we might invite
a few friends over, give them the info about Monseur Sault
and his Lithographs, and then let everyone try to GUESS which
"science" this print personifies before we cut it out of the
frame and read the label at the end of the evening.

As long as I have the Living Room cleaned up, any excuse for
a get-together will do, y'know?
Gather some art-lovers, and let the drunken debauchery begin!!!!
