3. it depends on the call

when Pittsburgh won the toss in OT but the officials gave the ball to Detroit anyway, Steeler fans complained that that lost them the game. No, they lost the game because their defense allowed the other team to drive down the field and kick a field goal.

However when the 49ers fumbled the ball and the Packers recovered with less than a minute to play, the officials did cost them the game by erroneously ruling that it was not a fumble. True, they gave up a TD a short while later, but they had won the game, not just the toss, and the officials took that victory away and gave the Niners another chance.

However, I did not see the game in question.

When the Ducks stop insisting the event the Oregonian called not just a bad call but "a violation of the rules of football" doesn't matter, or perhaps when they admit that what the Oregonian also said about the entire game, to wit that Oregon was outplayed. I've said my piece on this before. You're certainly correct. OU blew a ton of chances to ice the game to an extent that the rule violation wouldn't have mattered, but that doesn't change the fact that the rule violation handed the Ducks the game on a silver platter.

And of course you know those refs have been suspended and will have their performance officially scrutinized the rest of the season because they violated the rules of football.

In all honesty, I hadn't planned to say another word, despite the fact that at least two bad calls and one rule violation were clearly apparent in that "blown call," notably an Oregon player past the line before the ball was kicked, an Oregon player touching the ball before it reached ten yards, and to ice everything, an Oregon player not ever recovering the ball at all to give them possession. That's not a "blown call." It's officiating from a basement somewhere in a different stadium while listening to a recording of a different game between two different teams that took place in a different year.

No, I wasn't going to say anything else. It's over. It's done. The responsible parties for this travesty are being punished. That is, I had shut up, until a Duck came along and prompted me to respond.

So, I'll reverse the question. Will the Ducks ever shut up?!? Or are they truly proud of having played poorly against a team that didn't play well themselves, yet still only managed to win because a set of individuals who weren't players violated the rules of football?
