New car vs. deer. It's a draw.
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 11:52 PM by Madrone
I suspect we've both sustained some damage.

FIRST and ONLY time I left the house today - I'd decided I wanted something to eat and didn't want to cook. Off I go. One mile down the road BOOM - deer over an embankment and in front of me. I didn't even have time to brake. Poor thing was tipped over and skidded about 20 feet on his side. I thought I'd killed him - although it would be a slow and torturous death since it was obviously not dead on impact. After laying in the middle of the road for a few he got up and painfully stumbled to the side of the road. A few more minutes of standing there, while I'm almost in tears trying to figure out what to do for this injured wild animal and he hobbles/jumps off into the woods. Hopefully not to lay down and die somewhere....

Thankfully I drive an Element (front of the car is plastic) so all I can see is a busted headlight, some plastic clips snapped off, a small dent on the hood, and wiper fluid leaking out all over the place. I smell antifreeze but can not find any evidence of it leaking anywhere. And there's deer hair on the windshield, sideview mirror, and tufts of it stuck in my grill.

I don't NEED this extra hassle with my car, and I can't stop thinking about the poor deer - afraid he's laying somewhere in the damp cold and mortally injured. I hit him doing 45 MPH.

Can someone PLEASE give me a do over - starting at about one year ago? Please???

1. Your insurance should cover all of this thankfully, under the
comprehensive part.

I hit a dog once, it was awful.... but it was covered completely, thankfully.

Good thing you stuck to the road too, and didn't go off and hurt yourself.

3. No reaction time whatsoever. I saw him pretty much as I hit him.
Hitting a dog would be AWFUL. That's my big fear.

Yeah, I'm lucky I have insurace that will cover it. It just sucks. And I can't stop thinking about the animal and if he's injured. That's really what I'm upset about - the car thing just annoys and frustrates me, especially since it's included in what's been a very long string of unfortunate and traumatic events of late.

2. That sounds rather traumatic
I can understand how badly you feel for the deer, but thank goodness you are alright.
If only cars had a way to repel deer so we would not hit them..it would be better for the wildlife and for us.

4. I think deer whistles work pretty well
though i've heard that they don't really do much. Alls I know is that I used to live in a heavily populated deer area, and we'd hit about one a year until my madre put on the deer whistles. Then didn't hit a deer for several years until one of the whistles broke and she neglected to replace it.
