Poll question: Most annoying college football cheer/ slogan
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 01:24 PM by undisclosedlocation
Well, as it turns out, the suggestions I got were mainly from people wanting to put down their rival schools. Sorry 'bout that. Only the first three came from me.

18. It's up; I was more thinking in terms of slogans that reflect a basic
hostility to any concept of meaning. Downtown U. here runs with the slogan "Go Cocks!" so my standards are correspondingly high (or low, if you prefer) for what constitutes annoying.:P

25. But some of the best college journalism out there is sports writing...
...and, more specifically, about college football. ;-)

Couldn't resist. :pals: I was a writer and editor for A&M's daily, and one of my dear friends from those days--one of the best writers I've EVER known--is now a columnist and sports editor at the Houston Chronicle (shout out to John Lopez). Some of the best journalistic writing you'll find comes out of the sports desk.

28. I'm not about to argue that
Especially since I was a sportswriter for eight years before they moved me to news.

But my point was, if we're gonna get all rootie-tootie over college football — which is, at base, a P.E. course — shouldn't we also get just a little excited over the other things colleges have to offer?

Y'know, like... knowledge.

53. The peculiar origin of "War Eagle"
Edited on Fri Sep-22-06 02:47 PM by ThoughtCriminal
Pronounced "Wah Egul!!!"

I'm 3rd generation Auburn, so I've heard a few stories that don't get as much publicity as the "Official" version. Auburn University prefers the Civil War story because it appeals to "Southern Heritage", but I managed to find other explanations here:

http://www.auburn.edu/tigercub/auburn_life/a_battle_cry.html

If think that the 1914 Carlisle Indians game may be the most likely origin because 1) It's silly enough to be true, 2) I remember reading an eyewitness account back in the early 1970's.

Edit:
While searching I found this charming pic:
