Ever opened the wrong car with your key?
I walked up to a car tonight that looked just like mine (a '95 G20), unlocked it with my key, started to get in, and then noticed that it was definitely NOT my car. How weird is that? I thought keys were supposed to be unique.

Have you ever done something like this? It's a weird feeling, for sure.

1. they're not unique
Edited on Fri Sep-15-06 01:31 AM by pitohui
yeah i've done it back when i had the number one car in america in the number one color, i believe i was later informed there were like 9 unique keys for like 90,000,000 cars of that type

i only stopped from driving away when i looked at the brake tag and realized it couldn't be mine, wrong date

another person in the area was arrested for actually driving off in the wrong car and not noticing, although i'm sure the charges were ultimately dropped when everyone figured out how what had happened

2. I nearly did, once.....
It scared me to death!

I remember looking around........hoping that no-one had seen me.....

And then backing quickly away.....:scared:

My new car has a keyless entry, so I don't think this could happen......

:hi:

16. I don't know...
We had a Buick in the States, and on our apartment parking lot there was another GM vehicle (I forget what) that everytime I pressed the button to open our trunk, it opened theirs too if they were parked too close. Didn't seem to work on the doors, though.

3. Quite a while ago. Recently, I discovered that the key to my front door
opens the laundry room, luckily the key to the laundry room (which is right next door, attached) doesn't open my front door. Actually, for a while, the laundry room key didn't open the laundry room, and I had to use my house key when the neighbors couldn't get in (they just thought my laundry key worked, I certainly didn't tell them it was my house key heheh).

4. Just a few weeks ago, I tried to open my trunk to pile groceries in
I couldn't get the trunk open. Soon, I realized that I was trying to open an identical car that had been parked right next to mine.

one time...and when I realized the car wasn't mine..I jumped out and looked around, hoping no one had seen me...but I have an even better story about keys...
I live on the left coast...my sister lives on the right coast, something akin to 3,000 mi from me..I owned a home...she lived in an apartment....I went to visit...and one day when we had gone somewhere, and came back, I wasn't thinking about me not being at home, took my house key out, and viola...opened her front door....we both stood there looking at each other dumbfounded...she wanted to know how I had gotten hold of her house key, and I told her, it isn't yours, it's mine..

6. Did the same thing. Got into a Honda Civic put the key in the ignition

adjusted the rearview mirror and saw a baby seat.

I didn't own a baby seat. I didn't own a baby.

I got out and looked around to make sure I wasn't
going to be charged with car theft from the rightful
owner.

Years later I found out that car thieves were going
to swapmeets and buying disgarded keys and using them
boost cars. Rule number one if you own a Honda Civic...
you don't own it. You're only borrowing it.

8. It's good to know I'm not the only one.
I have a '99 Camry, cool bronze in color, and there are a million where I live!

I actually managed this at my son's school while the owner was walking up to her car. No worries, tho, she told me she had tried to get into my car a couple of times as well.

10. Not only opened the wrong car, but drove off with it.
It was a rental Ford Taurus and my client was a large company with a huge parking lot. End of the day, get into a silver Ford Taurus and drive to the airport. I go to rental car return, opened the trunk and think...that's not my luggage!

11. Some years ago....
I was with a group of friends at a music club in the Montrose. We went around the corner for a smoke & returned to find one of the guys' cars missing! His major emotion was shock that anyone would bother to steal the little piece of junk.

In a few minutes, it reappeared. An Indian guy jumped out, filled with fear that these Texans would beat him up as a car thief. We laughed. Then he used his key to start his similar--but not identical--little Japanese car & drove off. (Probably vowing never again to drink a beer.)

12. Yep. Even though the door handles were different. And they were different
colors. Needless to say, I decided not to drive anywhere.

13. LOL! One time...
...There was a car that looked a lot like mine (same make and model), but when I opened the door, there was a seat cover on the driver's seat, and I don't ever use seat covers. I was totally blown away.. My car was one aisle over. I locked that car and walked over to mine.

14. This is why I own The Club.
I'm sure my Toyota Corolla would have driven off with someone else if not.

15. Who changed my upholstery?
Unlocked the car, got in, started to stick the key in the ignition and noticed that my upholstery had changed color and design.

oooohhhhhhhhhh ......

got out and found my car a few spaces away.

17. In the early 90's, I worked with three people who owned Ford Escorts.
They could all open each others cars with their own keys.
