Listening to an interesting Tom Petty interview, talking about the ..
Traveling Wilburys... how thay got together.

George Harrison was the guy with the original idea. He did not specifically decide that he wanted to perform with these guys. He wanted to get back into music after a long exile, but not as the "front" guy... he was a "band" guy. Dylan, Petty and Jeff Lynne all got together with him by chance. They all decided they had to have Roy Orbison as their lead singer, so they went to him as a group and asked him. He said yes, and off they went.

After Roy died, Petty says there was a big controversy about who would replace orbison, but they all knew he would not be replaced.

Cool, huh?

15. Yeah, probably one of the best 'supergroup' projects ever.
Plus, it seemed to light a fire under Dylan again, which was nice.

5. I'll have to wait until the next commercial break, to let you know.
My radio's screwed up, so all I can do is punch presets, I don't even know what station I'm listening to at the moment.

is say it's a Westwood One broadcast. I think it's this guy Joe Benson talking to Petty.

Nothing about this interview yet, from what I can see. Some other cool interviews there, like Chrissie Hynde.

on edit.. it's not Joe Benson, but somebody named Norm Weinert. Looks like a dead-end re. podcast, unfortunately.

4. That is very cool. I love it, but . . .
Roy didn't sing that much lead on the album. In fact, the only one I remember is "Not Alone."

However, perhaps my memory has faded.

6. No, I think you're right.
I think Petty just told a little white lie.

We can forgive him tho, can't we? I mean, it's Roy Orbison, after all.

8. Yes, I forgive Tom.
And I will always worship Roy. ;)

Roy is one of the top five pop/rock vocalists of all time. I bow down to him.

13. At least two. Wilburys came after Cloud Nine, which came after the hiatus
Jeff Lynne was producing Harrison, Petty and Orbison at that time; most likely he was the prime mover in starting the Wilburys.

14. According to Tom Petty, Harrison instigated the process.
Lynne may very well have been the prime mover, as you said. There was pure chance involved, initially, as Harrison, Petty and Dylan got together. I believe Lynne then became involved, and the final piece of the puzzle was Orbison.
