Man! I so totally suck at being single
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 11:22 PM by leftofthedial
I might as well just give it up.

I spent 30 years more or less happily monogamous, apparently learning to be the biggest idiot on the planet.

I'm smart, pretty funny, talented, reasonably good looking and a complete buffoon.

Sheesh!

1. Are you saying that you need some person hanging around you . . .
. . . all of the time in the same house and bed and kitchen?

Why?

2. No no no no no!
Just that I apparently lost or never developed the skills necessary to get some one to hang around for a couple of hours in bed . . .

Instead, I seem to have learned some sort of "no-I'm-already-taken-so-get-lost" techniques that I can't now unlearn.

3. Lefty, it sounds like you just took a bad hit.
I'm sorry you got stepped on. I know that kind of thing is no fun at all. All I can tell you is that it gets better and that the world is full of crappy advice. But really, it does get better. I've seen it happen a dozen times to good friends of both genders and seen more than a few unexpected sunrises myself.

Just be patient and be true to yourself (that's only semi-crappy advice) and only do things that are temporarily stupid.

I know in the long run you'll be happy. Eventually everybody is.

4. thanks for the advice and encouragement!
I'm just lacking in necessary social skills. Got married too young and divorced too old or something. My radar is all messed up and I'm socially clumsy. I need an upgrade.

I guess I'll just start swinging the bat. There may be some ugly swings, but eventually I'll find a groove.

5. I have the opposite problem.
I ROCK at being single. And every time I get in a relationship (rarely) I prove it. :) It will take a very special man to tie me down. And I don't think he exists. Which is just as well - seeing as how I love my freedom, independence, and time alone.

a reasonable frigging conversation would be nice . . .

8. Oh. Hmmm....
Not sure if I have any advice for that one. It can be a double edged sword, though. I can easily talk to most anyone - and about anything, and I've been told I have the rare gift of a sincere listening ability. HOWEVER - this can cause problems. I've ended up being the object of unrequited love more than a few times because of those conversations - and that isn't all that comfortable.

So I dunno. Conversation is GREAT - just don't do what I do. Whatever that may be.

13. LOL
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....*pulls hair out*

u4ic is correct in his statement below though. Ask questions! I do that a lot - because I am genuinely interested in people. So I ... well, I pry. It is true that most people will not pass up an opportunity to talk about themselves.

9. Ask questions
and listen. People love to talk about their interests. Being genuine trumps pick-up lines any day.

Good luck. :pals:

12. thanks.
If I can just learn to fake sincerity, I'll have it made!

I think my biggest problem is that I'm impatient and I'm my own worst critic . . .

15. Not fake it
learn it. People can sense if you're actually disinterested...

Be gentle with yourself. It sounds like you're starting to learn these skills. You wouldn't expect to know how to ski right off the bat. Same here, it's still a skill to learn.

Perhaps a group like Toastmasters may help? Or going to a place where you won't be judged, but rather supported, like a Unitarian church?

14. hiya Peggy! How are you?
I've tried all the "advice" the Loungers have offered . . .

I hang out in the produce department so much, the store people think I have a zucchini fetish.

I walk my incredibly cute dog in the park three times a day--no luck for me, although my dog is doing alright.

I'm the only musician I know with no groupies.

I oughtta be Cary Grant, but instead I'm Lou Costello.

Good to hear from you!

20. My dear leftofthedial........
I'm quite good, thanks!

I actually had good news today........last week I had outpatient surgery to remove the papilloma from my right breast...

Today I saw the surgeon, and he told me the lab didn't find any cancer cells, and that the margins of where he cut were clean, that is, negative for cancer......

So I'm happy!

Thanks for asking, sweetie........

And BTW, if the things you're doing aren't working, then you might want to branch out and try some other things, OK?

BTW also........where is your pic?

You promised..........

:loveya:
