Poll question: Dave Matthews band
Great song about *

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with a bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up

Oh, baby, it's not easy sometimes
They build these walls ever higher and hide behind them
Seems an odd way to try and make things right
Oh I feel like I go crazy sometimes

Our finest hour arrives
See the pig dressed in his finest fine
The believers stand behind him and smile
As the day lights up with fire

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with a bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up

I remember the words of the misguided fool
Do unto others as you'd have them do
Not an eye for an eye is the golden rule
Just leaves a room full of blind men

And the finest hour arrives
See the pig dressed in his finest fine
Don't believe him leave and stand behind him and smile
As the day lights up with fire

Everybody wake up

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with a bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up

1. Personally can't stand them...
Though the song they did with Jurassic 5 was good.

2. Very dull, limited band
They have chops to burn, but basically use them to play the same song over and over. Strum that acoustic! Get that little catch in your throat going! Jam! Play! Strum vigorously! Sing sophomorically bad doggerel and make them think it's profound! Strum some more! Oo! Oo! We're JAMMING!

A recent concert review in the L.A. Times summed them up as "the Grateful Dead for Republicans". I know, I know, they aren't politically Republican, but his gist was that they are rather monochromatic-sounding, and not prone to taking risks musically - the Dead comparison was apt if only because they were jam-oriented, and had their own limitations. He wondered how the people at the shows could be so drunken and rowdy when the music didn't live up to the audience behavior (I'm sooooo wasted!). I completely got where he was coming from, because the popularity of the DMB has been very puzzling to me since he emerged in the early 90's. I remember when he played campus parties in Virginia, and really, they haven't evolved much beyond a glorified frat boy band. Give the people what they want, I suppose.

3. I remember when they were still a "local" band
I think my sister went to a show or two. :P

4. I applaud Matthews for championing the great Chris Whitley...
advocating cannabis, and for his liberalism, but the DMB really doesn't do much for me
