7. I posted on DU recently that I quit drinking...
And she was one of my inspirations. I printed her quote, "Quitting drinking is one of the great stories of my life."

I had a feeling she wouldn't be around long. I had read she was in the advanced stages of cancer.

best friend's mother had esophageal cancer only two years ago and I know he'll once again start worrying about it recurring.

19. May she be at peace
I loved Ann Richards! I will never forget her slam at Bush Sr. at the 1988 Democratic convention, "He was born with a silver foot in his mouth!"

The way Chimpy ran a dirty gubernatorial campaign against her was the ugliest of his political crimes up until he stole 2000. History will judge the people of Texas harshly for allowing that to happen. For now, they have my condolences.

21. "History will judge the people of Texas harshly"
I think not. You have to remember that many people do not (or cannot) vote because they feel disenchanted or are disenfranchised. Taking this into account much less than half of the Texan adult population voted for Il Douché in 1994.

Of course however Texas Republicans will not get sympathy from historians.

23. Thank you for your words, An-So. I met her twice and she was a true lady
She was the last Texas governor who actually gave a damn about real people--the kind you don't meet at a country club. In the end, I'm sure history will judge that Ann Richards made a difference in the world. That in our times is all any of us can hope for.

Probably not her who said that.

I'll miss her -- she was a great lady.

31. I love her. She was smart, talented, and had a lot of common sense.
Her kind has gone by the wayside since the neocon spin machine has taken over the government and media.

But we will never forget the meaning of truth and justice.

Thank you, Governor Richards.

34. This is so very sad
We have lost a shining light for the progressive movement and a truly wonderful, courageous, compassionate woman of such passion and integrity who always stayed true to her beliefs and principles and made Texas and the world a better place for having done so. As I said in my LBN post, if there were more people like Ann Richards in the world, it would be a much better place

Rest in peace Ms Richards. May the legacy of your good works endure and thank you for ensuring that the world was a much, much better place for having had you in it. You gave so many people so much hope and inspiration through your life and your passionate commitment to your beliefs
