Q: What is "Blu-Ray"?
I was doing an Ebay search for a couple old sci fi movies, and that format category came up.

1. Yet another DVD format, just to confuse us and make us buy new
DVD players.

It uses a blue laser, which has a shorter wavelength than other color lasers, and therefore can read smaller "pits" on the DVD, which therefore can hold more information because of being able to have more, and smaller pits.

All clear now?

5. Thank you. As my grandfather once said, it's better to know a little bit
about a lot of things, than to know a lot about a few things.

Actually, I came up with that saying myself. But it sounds better to have such wisdom passed down by a grandfather, yes?

9. Don't think so. Is he tall, dark, handsome, and half Indian, half Irish?
If so, maybe. If not, probably not.

2. It is one of the new HD movie formats
It is kind of like the battle between Betamax and VHS in the early '80's. Blu-Ray is from Sony and HD-DVD is from Microsoft. Just wait to buy one of the other until the porn industry figures out which format they are going to use because they seem to always pick the winner.

Empire Strikes Back on Betamax at a hotel in International Falls, MN on a family trip when I was a kid.

7. Yes, they're the real market force. Without them, NO videotape format
would have caught on...and let's not EVEN talk about the vital role they played in making the Internet as popular as it is today.

Technology's dirty little secret, yes?

10. Absolutely
Of course with the advent of HD porn people will see how really repugnant some of those women are.

12. Not to mention just how fake those fake hooters look. Sorry, but I'd
prefer a bit of sag over seeing a woman who looks like she has two halves of a basketball stuck to her chest.

Just my preference.

16. I won't get you started. I don't want to think about it...ARGH!
Yes, indeed. I am fortunate that Mrs R looks damn strong for her age, but I'll take the wrinkle or two and enjoy it rather than look at some liposuctioned, silicone-injected, botoxed, pancake-madeup "porn starlet" just about EVERY day.

11. HD-DVD isn't from microsoft
though MS does back them. Blu-ray is not just from Sony, for that matter. They're both created by consortiums of tecj companies which makes the whole situation between them even more intractable.

Oddly enough, I don't think porn is going to pick this one cause apparently porn stars don't look that great when you can see all the years of abuse in crystal clear high definition. I'd say the success of Sony's PS3, which will have an internal blu-ray drive, will decide this one.

15. Quite true
I think they'll probably ship sometime in November, though it sounds like they're having a lot of trouble manufacturing all the blue lasers so there's probably going to be a shortage for a while.

Being a bit of a tech geek and videophile myself, I have to say I hope blu-ray ends up winning cause it's clearly the better format.

20. It's yet another new format that Hollywood uses to sell their crap
Personally, I'm siding with whatever format the porno industry chooses.
