Maybe we need a Satire Forum
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 08:20 PM by Mike03
I over-reacted the other night to a funny/satirical post that was making fun of a serious post here on DU, and over the past few days I have felt bad about my over-reaction. On the one hand, I get very involved in the serious posts here, but on the other hand, I really appreciate satire and understand its value, and don't like to see those threads shut down. Yet, I am guilty of getting really angry at someone with a good sense of humor who did make fun of a serious post. Is there room for both serious/sad posts and their satirical counterparts? I don't know the answer, I'm just tossing this out for other opinions. As a huge fan of satire, but also a very emotional person, I have mixed feelings. It's so easy to become egotistically protective of a point of view, and sometimes the satirical threads wake me up out of being too microcosmic. It's the same reason I love Howard Stern. But, on the other hand, I can totally understand people being offended, as I have been as well.

Signed: Conflicted.

1. It would help if people weren't so goddamned hypersensitive.

But, hey, that's just me, tossing my crap into the ring.

Or, actually, I should say it this way: It would help if the goddamned hypersensitive people would just shut the fuck up and leave the rest of us, we who are okay with sarcasm and believe that nothing is taboo because we're mature and adult, alone.

2. I know what you mean
But maybe it depends on the issue, like if your dog dies, to me that is too serious to goof on, but if it's not a death or something, maybe that is goofable. You know what I mean? There's probably some line.

4. True, that - I do think we need to be sensitive to people suffering grief
or new news of a disease, esp. a terminal one... but otherwise, for the most part, pretty much everything is up for sarcasm, humorous riffs, sarcasm, and jocular hilarity in the form of spoofs and humorous vignettes.

8. I think sometimes we give each other mixed messages
when one poster posts something serious and another person posts a satire piece. Then they get mad at each other when really they wouldn't ordinarily.

It would be truly great if we had an official satire forum where those of us who would like to see jokes and humor and satire could go and know that was the purpose of that forum. I'd vote yes to that and I'd visit such a forum.
