'Rockstar Supernova' watchers: who would you like to win?
And who do you think will win? Dilana, Lukas, Magni or Toby.

Me, I hope Dilana wins. But I think they'll choose Toby.

1. I think Dilana.
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 10:05 AM by blm
I think they recognize that Toby is fun and delightful the way a cover band singer is fun and delightful for a night out.

I don't think they'll entrust their reputation as a star-driven band to a lesser talent like that. Dilana has all the vocal ingredients to bring their material to the public.

The producer on this album is also known for his work with serious female vocalists like Pink.

Dilana would be like having Janis Joplin quality vocal with a 2006 edgy stage dynamic and without the drug problem.

You look at their eyes when they watch her and listen to her - that's RESPECT you see there.

2. I think they will end up with 2 singers: Dilana and Toby.
Although frankly I think they should ditch the old geezers and just use the house band for the new group. They could rotate singers between Dilana, Toby, Ryan and maybe bring back Storm for comic relief.

9. Seems they knew awhile ago.
After reading the article, sounds as if they ignored efforts by the original Supernova to work something out. That band has 4 CDs (even if they aren't popular), so they judge did the right thing.

I like Dilana the most. She has the intensity of Melissa Etheridge, with some Janis also in there. Magni seems inconsistent. But all are better than Chris from AI, IMO.

6. You hit the nail with what is needed most in a front singer - consistency
They have a band and an album ready to roll, and the singer has to have the chops to kill every one of the songs in the studio and recreate it onstage immediately - they already have a heavy tour lined up.

At least Supernova has the advantage of being a new band. People always compared the new INXS to the old one's glory days.

8. Toby.
Dilana has too much of a prima donna/drama queen personality - I can't imagine Gilby, Jason, or Tommy want to deal with that again, as each has had to do so before with other bandmates.

Lukas is awesome - but I don't think he fits Supernova.

Magni? Meh. He just doesn't draw me in.

This was a done deal WAY before today.

45. Yep. He said that.
I don't know why anyone would think that they'd pick a woman. No woman will ever win Rockstar no matter how good she is. Guys like Tommy Lee and Gilby came from bands where women were object to be used as sex toys and discarded. That's the way those types of guys are. I hate they sent Toby home too. My picks were Dilana and Toby.

I gave Lukas a real shot at backing up his look with his singing. IMHO, his singing sucks. He just growls and falls all over the stage. I don't get what they see in him as far as his singing goes, but then again most metal singers cannot really sing anyhow. Toby and Dilana were more punk singers. Punk singers are great singers (that's why punk bands don't need 20 minute guitar solos like metal bands do) whereas most metal singers just growl and scream with no real melody. The melody in metal is always the guitars not the singers. Is it just me or do other people notice that too?

74. I have no idea even what to make of this sentence...
"Punk singers are great singers (that's why punk bands don't need 20 minute guitar solos like metal bands do) whereas most metal singers just growl and scream with no real melody. The melody in metal is always the guitars not the singers. Is it just me or do other people notice that too?"

Honestly as someone who is a musician and has listened to obscene amounts of punk AND metal over the past 25 years, I can't even fathom this. If you're talking about stuff like black metal or thrash metal then perhaps. But most punk singers can't sing worth a damn. And that's what's great about them and punk in general. It's attitude first and musicianship second or maybe third.

Perhaps if you're talking about MTV style punk and metal (which it seems like the dudes on Rockstar are) then you're right. But I think most fans of either genre will tell you that most of those bands are neither punk nor metal.

76. I call bullshit.
Punk singers can sing circles around metal singers any day. All metal singers do is scream. And yes, I am a musician too. I have played in both metal bands and punk bands and I can tell you that metal singers have a 1 to 2 year window of time to do their screaming before they get polyps and a whole host of other problems with their voices.

From the experiences of many many musicians that I know personally, I can say that the worst problem the punk singers have had is acid reflux disease which wasn't related to the type of singing that they do. Punk singers are not the worst singers. There is no melody whatsoever in metal singing, yet punk singing actually has a melody. Why else do most people remember guitar solos when thinking of metal bands and most people remember singing melodies when thinking of punk bands? Metal is all about the guitar and punk is about the singing and the beat. Period.

Maybe you are just one of those metal snobs and I am just one of those punk snobs and we will just have to agree to disagree. I honestly do not know what to make of your post either. We couldn't possibly disagree more on our takes of the two styles of music.

86. I agree with vi5 here.
Maybe you just haven't listened to punk music? I actually can't think of a single punk singer who is actually a good singer, whereas some of the most amazing singers of all time (Chris Cornell, Axl Rose) were metal singers.

91. Punk is the main type of music I listen to actually.
And yes, I have heard metal. Where is Axl Rose's voice today? I ask because just like many other metal singers, he destroyed his voice in only a few years with the screaming. If you do not think Joey Ramone was a great singer, then maybe we will just have to agree to disagree. Deborah Harry was great too. Also, Mike Ness. Also many others, but I see you hate the punk rock singers altogether. So why bother trying to discuss.

94. O.K. there you go...
If you still consider Debbie Harry "punk" then that's where we'll have to agree to disagree. And I say this as a die hard Debbie Harry and Blondie fan, a die hard Ramones fan, and a died in the wool Social Distortion tattoo, sporting Mike Ness super fan. But if you think Ness is a more gifted singer than Bruce Dickinson or Rob Halford then....well I have nowhere more to go with this.

96. I do consider them better than
Bruce or Rob. Yes.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I could bring up little known hardcore punk singers, but that would be pointless too. Although they are better singers, at least in my opinion, if no one has heard them, it may not even matter at that point. I guess we'll just have to disagree on this one.

Only love for the punk! I just don't think they're good singers. Has nothing to do with my love for the music...I actually thought that was the point of punk, ya know? To be a crappy singer?

Also, Debbie Harry - not punk. Nor is Mike Ness.

93. O.K. give me your definition of punk bands and metal bands...
Which singers are you talking about in both genres? Or are you using a ridiculously broad brush of the term "punk" to include things like Indie rock?

Punk bands to me are the Germs, the Adolescents, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Negative Approach, The Ramones, The Clash, etc. All among my favorite bands ever. None of their singers were technically good singers. They were aggressive shouters who could barely carry a tune but had attitude and presence.

Metal bands are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Helloween, Dio, etc. all of whom have technically gifted singers who have range. Even Tom Araya of Slayer can hit high notes.

If your idea of punk is Green Day (or the aforementioned indie rock) and your idea of metal is Korn or Slipknot or Godsmack then you maybe have a point.

I'm not a punk or a metal snob. I enjoy both forms of music immensely and have for decades at this point. But your'e honestly the first person I've heard or read in 25 years of following both forms of music who ever claimed that punk singers were gifted while metal singers were not.

...And he certainly could not have said even that to a woman.

I go back to my original assessment of the whole "rockstar" reality show. A woman will never win it because the old boys club is still in full force with the establishment musicians they are using to pick singers. I personally hope that both Toby and Delana find way more success than whatever Supernova will call themselves when the courts finally make them quit using that other band's name.

103. They didn't say who were the "bottom three."
Edited on Thu Sep-14-06 02:47 PM by Left Is Write
At the beginning of the show they were doing the bottom two - they just had Magni, Toby, AND Lukas stand up so as to increase the suspense. It was only Magni and Toby who had to perform for their survival. After those performances, Magni was eliminating, leaving three. Lukas and Dilana were the top two vote getters the previous night, but it was never said that Dilana had more than Lukas.

Edited to make verb match subject.

Marty should NOT have won. Thank God, INXS knew best who was right for their band. It was not Marty.

I went to an INXS concert in Minneapolis. Marty was the opening act. His set was BORING.

J.D. Fortune was on fire and the band was thrilled with him. They still are thrilled. They rocked and are a real band again.

Sorry....anyone who thinks Marty Casey should have won last year's Rockstar/INXS is wrong. INXS thinks you are wrong, too.

in my humble opinion there is just something special about marty and i didn't want him to end up fronting a bunch of has beens, he has something special about him i can't explain

j. d. is fine to front INXS and i'm glad he won, it seems a good slot for him but i think marty can come forward and do something different and special given the chance

this year's show did not capture my imagination, there was no one who had that special fire that marty had

all were very talented, however, dilana and lucas, who seemed fated from the start to be at the "showdown" seem like poseurs and very unsympathetic to me, good as they are as musicians, why do i want to watch a couple of jerks win prizes?

84. I agree that it has nothing to do with intelligence
but more to do with taste. I'm not necessarily saying that one person has "better" taste than anyone else. Taste is just taste. Do you like tacos better than hotdogs? I do. I'd say neither of us has "bad" taste if we prefer something different to eat in any given situation. And it certainly has nothing to do with intelligence. There are no right or wrong opinions. Just opinions. :hi:

I agree here, but I have a fundamental difference with a number of DUers regarding some kinds of music. I'm a pop fan and like some country. But at the same time, I like many other kinds of music.

Other than that, I like everything. My entire family are professional musicians....all cept me.

80. We all have our opinions.
There is nothing to make you a black sheep. We agree on most things politically, but music is something everyone projects their own feelings into for various reasons. There is no right or wrong opinion. I'm arguing with someone upthread about punk singers versus metal singers. We will never agree on the topic. All we can do is try to make our points. At the end of the day, that person and I will not agree about which singers sing more melodic. I chalk it up to opinions. Opinions are neither right nor wrong.

On Lukas: To be honest with you I love the guy and at the same time hate him. I think I just expected way more from him because of the way he dressed and looked. He has potential though. Don't get me wrong. I just liked Toby and Dilana more based on their singing. I didn't particularly care for Magni's style at all. What does this mean? Nothing. Those are just my opinions.

47. I was pulling for Dilana....
She is insane, and I LOVE that about her!LOL! I'm just pissed that she is a Houstonian, and I never heard of her, even though I am a fan of the local music scene! I looked online, and it seemed that she mostly played out in the boonies.

I hope she does well. She's interesting, which is more than can be said for most bands who make the charts.

69. OMG, her performance last night. of 'Roxanne' was incredible
when she started off acapella (sp?), and then at the end she had her '3 Boyfriends' as back-up, it was awesome! And her performance last night of 'SuperSoul' was really good. I wasn't that sold on it before, but last night made me a believer in that song. I don't know what Gilbey was saying when he was talking about her song-writing ability.

Apparently, she was absolutely huge in Europe several years ago, before she moved to the states. She performed at huge rock concerts with the likes of Joe Cocker & Golden Earring, and also has sung the title songs to 2 movies. Not bad so far. And I think she will go even further with the notoriety and acclaim she has won on Rockstar:Supernova...

50. I'm from Houston too, and was rooting for Dilana all the way thru the show
and was very disappointed with the outcome. Here's a question: At the beginning of the show, when the voting results were announced via the announcement of the bottom 3, the bottom 3 included Magni, Toby and yes, LUKAS! So, I wish someone could explain to me, how at the end of the show, Tommy Lee announced that Lukas was the top-vote getter? If he WAS the top vote-getter, why was he in the bottom 3? Sometin' smells fishey to me.... And that makes me a very unhappy camper.

Here's Dilana's official website: http://www.dilanafans.com/

Apparently, she has been performing at a restaurant here in Houston on the weekends, but I haven't even heard about her. When she returns to Houston, I'm sure she'll be bigger and have more options. Her boyfriend is her hairdresser, and they live in Spring.

55. A lot of people are saying that...
I just don't think I could sit through a whole concert with Lukas fronting the band. Even though I strongly feel Dilana should have won, I think that had she won, the spotlight would have been on her, and not the band. They would have looked like a back-up band, and I think they have some pretty hefty egos involved. She is such a magnetic performer and amazing artist and singer, that I think she will land on her feet, with her own record contract. Anyone in LA, viewing that series, couldn't help but sense her 'star' quality and vocal ability. She reminds me of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. Very earthy, and someone who, when on stage, you just can't take your eyes off of.

Ok. You can tell I really liked Dilana. Sorry for going on so long! I know a LOT of people felt the exact same way about Lukas.... :hi:

57. Lukas is going to shock some people.
He'll challenge the inadequacies of SN and either lead them, or leave them. I don't think SN will be able to keep up. They do nothing for me musically. Plus, I think Lukas will have more voice training.

Dilan will be fine. She was not good for them either. In fact, maybe the final 4 should have formed their own band and screw SN. (cept for Gilby...he's kinda cute)

I really like your idea of the final 4 forming a band. I thought it a curious thing for Magni to say, at the bitter end, that he would prefer 'being' in the band, rather than 'fronting' the band!

100. I heard the Melissa connection right away
As good as Melissa is, I think Dilana is a little more versatile. I'm not sure Melissa would have done "Zombie" by the Cranberries as well.

Lukas just has some inflection in his voice that bothers me.

58. It wasn't technically a "bottom 3," as I understood it. They asked them to
stand up based on the fact that they were in the bottom 2 at some point during the voting. Dilana was the only one who was never in the bottom 2 in the voting last night. Lukas was in the bottom 2 at some point, even though he had the most votes at the final tally. But the fact that he was in the bottom 2 at some point is why they asked him to stand at the beginning of the show. That's how I interpret what they said.

82. She said that they were the ones "at risk" tonight. Dilana was the only
one not "at risk," but that was a lie because she was at risk when it came down to the final 2. Lukas was aksed to stand up with Magni and Toby because at some point in the voting, Lukas was in the bottom 2 (obviously not when the voting concluded though, because Tommy said that Lukas got the highest number of votes). It was a confusing attempt to create a little pseudo-drama with them standing up at the beginning. It made you think that Dilana was going to be the winner (which could have happened).

I was going to actually buy a ticket to this over marketed, cheesy concert if they picked D- but Lukas? Okay, I can admit that he has a good look, and seems like a nice kid, but...

he's so adorable in a goth kinda way, you know, not offensive at all but still HARD ROCK! :sarcasm:

what
the
fuck ?

I turned off the tv two seconds after he started wailing with the band. puke. can't sing a vowel to save his life. his voice will be shot after two concerts.

sorry friend- we'll have to agree to disagree on this. I have wanted him off the show for weeks. He cannot sing. he does that yelling thing with and cannot sing vowels properly. Plus he looks like a child playing with the big kids. His voice was completely overshadowed by the band (house and SN)each and every episode. he doesn't have the chops for it...tommy screwed up.

now, ask me if he's cute, and I'll say yes! adorable!
