1. Are there white patches in the back of your throat?

That's one way to tell. If so, you probably have strep. If not, you still may have it. You can get a quick strep test.

3. do NOT mess with strep
my mother had pericarditus (sp?)where the strep got to the sac surrounding the heart. Not good. when everyone else did cryptosporidium, my kid's got scarlet fever from their aunt who was carrying an undiagnosed systemic strep infection. not good + not good. go to a walk-in at least for the quick test. please? :hi:

8. it's a strep variant.
yeah, 19th century killer. Now with antibiotics, not so bad. My kids got the 'sand paper rash' but never really got sick. It's still not something to mess with.

4. I found out I had strep when
I had a fever for a week and a really sore throat with a lot of "goop" discharge from what I thought was my sinuses. Then my brother calls to inform us that he and his wife have strep, as we had eaten at their home a week earlier, were we feeling okay? Grrrr....

7. Check yourself out....
My friend's father died as a result of complications from strep. My kid got scarlet fever as a result of strep (whe was only 4 and never complained of a sore throat and had no other symptoms to speak of util she got the spots).

Go to a local clinic and just get the throat culture.
Please...

9. If you think you have Strep, GO TO THE DOCTOR!

I'm serious. My dad ignored a strep throat infection that went untreated and traveled to his kidneys and destroyed them. He ended up on dialysis for 10 years, got a transplant and died 2 years later.

Seriously, strep can travel weird places in your body and really fuck things up. I know someone else that almost died because the infection went into his heart. He's okay now though.

And trust me, I am in no way a hypochrondriac. I've just seen weird shit with strep, so that scares me.
