Goodbye for now
I haven't been around much lately, but I'm going to be around even less in the near future. I've got a few friends here so I figured I'd let you all know what's going on.

There's going to be a lot of changes going on in the life of Droopy. I signed a contract to put my house up for sale yesterday. One good thing about that is that my aunt is a real estate agent so I got a good deal on the contract. Today I have an appointment to go to a lawyer to sign a power of attorney saying that my mom can handle my business for me while I'm out on the road. I plan on being gone for 2 or 3 months at a time.

At work I'm going to take a class that will qualify me to be a trainer. That's right, I'm going to be teaching the new generation of America's driving force. I think that's going to be both fun and scary. The best thing about it is that I'm going to be making the best money that I've ever made in my life. It's going to be a challenge, though. I might change my tune the first time I guide a student through some mountains or over a snow covered road. That will be the true test of my will to be a teacher.

The plan is to sell my house and then get out of debt. I'm thinking that all of that will take about a year to do. I'm about $20,000 in debt aside from my house. That probably doesn't sound like a lot of dough to some of you, but it looks like a mountain of debt to a truck driver.

Once I have accomplished getting out of debt I'm going to buy a piece of land out in the country and set a mobile home on it. I'm going to pay cash for that. I'm estimating that is going to take me another 2 years to accomplish. Then I will find a job that gets me home every night and I will be debt free for the rest of my life.

That's the plan anyway. I'll try to pop in here with a story or something every once in a while. It's been good talking with you all. I'll be here the rest of the day today then I leave out tomorrow morning. Take it easy.

20. Yep. I've been driving big rigs for the past 10 years or so.
The decision to teach is more than just a finanical one although I will be honest and say that it is an important aspect. I also think that I have something that I can share with new drivers. I've been very safe over my time as a trucker with no moving violations. I hope I can pass that on to other drivers. It also seems like teaching is a very rewarding job.

36. I would prefer to teach my trade rather than do it
But like yours, it requires more school and continuing education to get certified and then to stay certified. Mostly from the software company (Autodesk) than the state and most if not all tuition reimbursement programs and the GI Bill require attending classes that are certified along with it's instructors.

BTW - I borrowed the old preacher/truck driver joke from an old EasyRiders magazine.

30. You're welcome. Thanks for reading them.
I've always hated being in debt, but this time I've gone too far. I went through 3 jobs in the past 3 months looking for the pie in the sky. That resulted in me doing a lot of credit card charging. I could try to hang on to this place, but I figure what's the point. I'll just be struggling and I will never be home anyway.

Droopy, you are one of the good ones here at DU. You will be sorely missed. I'm glad to know you have such great plans. Take good care!

on edit:

Let's say goodbye with a smile, dear,
Just for a while, dear, we must part.
Don't let the parting upset you,
I'll not forget you, sweetheart.
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.
Keep smiling through, just like you always do,
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.

So will you please say hello to the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long.
They'll be happy to know that as you saw me go,
I was singing this song.

After the rain comes the rainbow,
You'll see the rain go, never fear,
We two can wait for tomorrow,
Goodbye to sorrow, my dear.

55. Again, best wishes, Droopy. One piece of advice, though . . . .
Don't invest in a mobile home. You can pay $20k for one and it will be worth $8k in two years. Bad choice. They depreciate like crazy. Better to buy a house which will increase in value or, at least, keep its value. :)
