Anyone else in the "cilantro tastes like soap" club?
I am...I'm hearing that it's quite common...I can't go near it, eat it, smell it... :puke:

Anyone? :)

13. Aparently, it's genetic
or so I've heard. Some people have a very strong aversion to cilantro, many of them describe it as soapy, and about 75% of people think the cilantro-haters are crazy. It's not because we're crazy, we genuinely are tasting something you aren't (and we wish we weren't tasting it).

18. That is correct.
The Washington Post ran a couple of stories about the studies on it, oh, maybe 7-8 years ago.

I wish I liked it--I really do. But it's an immediate, visceral reaction--the smell even makes me want to run from the room.

14. I've heard a lot of people say that.
At the health food store, a couple of my coworkers wouldn't even go into the stockroom, if we got a case of cilantro in with the produce delivery or were picking out the bad bunches from our stock.

Personally, I'm fine with cilantro.

Not exactly like soap, but pretty much horrifying. It tastes like rotten, salted, celery that's been burnt in the oven with melted plastic, and then reconstituted, and then covered in soap.

26. Well, I didn't understand anything good about it when I first tasted it. .
but someone made some home made salsa, the kind you chop up with a sharp knife, with fresh hot peppers, and tons of cilantro in it, and it was the first time I'd tasted fresh made salsa with cilantro in it, so I thought it was pretty great.

But I do love it now, but it's kinda pointless unless it's mixed with the right stuff --- tomatoes, or hummus pita sandwiches. I try to eat alot of it because it is supposed to be -- The Greatest Thing -- for detoxifying your body of heavy metals, such as, mercury fillings til you can afford to get the darned things taken out!!! And afterwards, too.

But soap? Nope! :)

I feel that way about fennel or licorice or anise --- grody stuff! You cilantro haters are probably those strange genetic mis-fits who love to chew on rubbery black licorice sticks!~

29. I used to love it
about a year ago, I developed a horrific sensitivity to it (and to mint, tarragon and other related herbs). It has varying degrees of effect, but at its worst, it makes me so sick I think I'm gonna die. I can't breathe or keep anything down . . . awful.

soap? yeah, a little. Especially when it comes back up.

32. ok -- now this is weird -- but i think it was
on the food channel -- but i had heard that for people who don't like cilantro it's genetic.

something abour chemical make-up makes it so you don't like it.

so cilantro divides us up -- people who like cilantro and people who don't.

i don't know if it's really true or not -- just thought it was interesting.

37. It is grotesque.
There are very few things that I can genuine barely force down my throat if needed (such as being served by an unsuspecting host), but corriander (as we call it) is definitely one of those things.

Sometimes it works when cooked - for example carrot and corriander soup is lovely :9 but by itself it's as much a toxin as arsenic to my mind.

38. Yes!!! I absolutely agree!
I do not understand the huge fan club for cilantro. I don't like it, either. When I have to make anything calling for cilantro, I substitute flat leaf parsley. I also don't understand the popular food obsession with making everything as "hot" as possible. Whenever I hear somebody on The Food Network saying that they want to turn up the heat on something, I figure that this means it would be too hot for me...x(

42. Just the opposite
I love cilantro in all its forms (coriander is the dried seed of the same plant, very useful in curries and middle eastern dishes).

But tarragon affects me the same way cilantro does you, and I think it does taste exactly like soap. Moreover, it tastes like soap dissolved in cheap white wine. My unfavorite flavor in the whole world.
