On 9/11, Radio Lady speaks with Dr. Sidney Schwab, a NW area surgeon.

"A surgeon can kill you...and you'll sleep right through it."

Dr. Sidney Schwab is my guest Monday on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Golden Hours." His 2006 memoir is called "Cutting Remarks: Insights and Recollections of a Surgeon." Dr. Schwab is a very verbal and personable guy -- and he has a great deal to say about the training he received for his profession.

You can read more about the book at: http://www.northatlanticbooks.com/store/1583941479.html

Scroll to the bottom of the page. North Atlantic Books also allows you to view the table of contents and read an excerpt.

I really enjoyed talking with Dr. Schwab and hope you'll find the time to listen. The program is scheduled for Internet broadcast at 1 PM Pacific Time/2 PM Mountain Time/3 PM Central Time/4 PM Eastern Time on September 11, 2006. (Please adjust for your time zone.) To hear the interview, go to my journal and follow the directions in the right column to link to the broadcast. The program starts right after approximately 5 - 7 minutes news and station IDs, so please be patient!

Dr. Sidney Schwab says, "I'm a pretty-much retired general surgeon. After a long and busy time in practice, I've taken a deep breath. And I'll blog. More importantly, I've written a book, "Cutting Remarks: Insights and Recollections of a Surgeon." It's about my surgical training in San Francisco in the 1970s, aimed at the lay reader with the goal of entertaining with good stories, informing with details of surgical anatomy, procedures, and diseases, in order to let the reader in on what it's all about."

You may want to check out his blog here.

Surgery captivates the public's imagination. It's the most dramatic - and seemingly glamorous - of medical fields.
This book is written for inquisitive laymen as well as anyone in the medical profession, this fascinating first-person account documents the career of one of America's top surgeons. Readers accompany Sidney Schwab through medical school at Case Western Reserve University; an internship; junior and senior residencies (with a detour to Vietnam, where he won a Purple Heart); and finally his chief residency years in San Francisco. With humor and poignancy - and sometimes graphic detail - Schwab recalls memorable surgeries, surgeons, and patients. He takes care to explain, in understandable and interesting fashion, a variety of diseases, medical issues, and surgical techniques. More than just a memoir, Cutting Remarks offers a compelling look at how trauma and surgery are handled at a major hospital, and provides valuable insight into a surgeon's relationship with both peers and patients.
