Recommend a film!
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 02:32 AM by Heidi
Today, I'm recommending one of my favorite films _ever_.

Jim Jarmusch's "Down By Law" (starring John Lurie, Tom Waits and Roberto Benigni), possibly one of the best New Orleans films ever made:

I'm pitching "Focus", with William Macy, Laura Dern, David Paymer (one of the most talented, under-recognised actors in Hollywood), and Meat Loaf Aday.

I'm also pitching "Series 7: The Contenders".

But for you, I'll add another of my favorites, "Paris, Texas," directed by Wim Wenders, written bySam Shephard and adapted by LM "Kit" Carson, starring Harry Dean Stanton, Dean Stockwell and Nastassja Kinski.

68. It was a little obvious....
...but I guess that sort of worked. I mean, if you're going to do a parody of something that basically bashes the audience over the head with its simplicity, you should keep to the same formula.

I wasn't crazy about the ending, ether, but I still really liked the movie.

but lately I've been on a Jim Jarmusch spree. Have you seen "Coffee and Cigarettes"?

I love this scene from "Coffee and Cigarettes," where Tom Waits says, "Yeah. I'm a doctor. Music and medicine, really. My thing is combining the two, living in that place where they overlap."

Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 02:58 AM by deucemagnet
He's made three that I know of. The most commercial one was The Krays, which was okay. He also made The Reflecting Skin and The Passion of Darkly Noon. The two latter films are bizarre, compelling, and beautifully filmed. The Passion of Darkly Noon contains the best performance Brendon Fraser ever committed to film. Both of the latter feature a young Viggo Mortenson. If you are in the mood for a tense, David Lynch-style drama (with, perhaps, a bit more humor than Lynch), then you will not be disappointed in these films.

...but I learned something about it: some people just don't get it. Okay, some people think it's too dirty. And some people (who are probably early birds) just don't get the essential "night-ness" of it.

My god, how I laughed at the Rome scene. It's brilliant. And the Russian cab driver -- wow!

The only think I don't like about the film is Winona Ryder.

45. Hi, grasswire!
You nailed something in your post: "some people just don't get it." When I was younger, it was important to me to "get" films, like I was awaiting some big payoff for the time I was investing in watching it. Now, I just _love_ to watch funky interactions between total strangers; that someone somewhere went to the trouble of putting together a film to show me something I wouldn't likely experience or observe in every day life is payoff enough. :high:

44. "O Auto da Compadecida"
Brazil's 's top-grossing, homegrown movie.

Most of the Internet reviews, like at Yahoo!, are factually incorrect. The story was not about Spain nor did the action take place there at all; it was loosely based on the Spanish picaresque style. This movie was filmed in the city of Cabaceiras, Paraíba in the Northeast of Brasil. I lived in the area and met the main actor, Matheus Nachtergaele, who played João Grilo.

The film (and tv mini-series) is based on an adaptation of the play by writer Ariano Suassuna who recounts the adventures of João Grilo, a poor dishonest sertanejo (a picaro) who cheats his cruel masters in order to earn his daily bread. João must struggle to attain salvation in a world of malcontents and hypocrites and even battle with the Devil himself.

It also stars "Central Station's" Fernanda Montenegro.

58. I recommend "Defending Your Life"
Partly because it's a good movie, but mostly because it probably REALLY pissed the fundies off when it came out.

According to this Albert Brooks movie, what gets you into heaven is how well you deal with fear during your life--the thing which prevents us from developing ourselves to the fullest--and not how great of a Christian you were.

75. I wish I could capitalize on that little talent
The only reason I write the Customer of the Day tales is that I've got to talk about these...well, I guess you'd call them people...somewhere and there's really nowhere else to turn.

I don't want to write a book about these people and sell it because, while it would be entertaining, the fact that I was making money off others' idiocy would be too depressing to me.

All three are very important, yet apparently forgotten films.

63. The Music of Chance
Just watch it!

Fan made trailer (a little bit spoilerish IMO, but I'm very fussy about knowing as little as possible about films & especially so in this case): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nDEVbtKtxg

(& as a few have got away with it, my second recommendation is for 8 Women (8 Femmes), a delightful French murder-mystery-musical/ comic-melodrama /etc. A fantastic cast (including Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Beart, Isabelle Huppert & Ludivine Sagnier) who are just awesome and clearly loving their roles.

64. Any of the Christopher Guest - Michael McKean movies...
"Waiting for Guffman" is very funny indeed, as are "Best in Show", "A Mighty Wind", and the best of all... "This is Spinal Tap".

And thanks for reminding me of "Down by Law".

This is a wonderful thread. May I suggest we repeat it several times a year?

70. Harold and Maude
I could recommend dozens more, of course, but this is an alltime favorite. I want to be like Ruth Gordon's character when I'm 80!
