These are several pages of my sketchbook with regard to my comic strip "Phoebe". I like sketchbooks probably more than the polished work because it gives you a clearer view of the thought process. You'll notice I tacked some vague personal notes in it as well. That's what sketchbooks are for!

I did those about 6 years ago, but a blank sketchbook is always a great tool to have. I still do a lot of jotting down of ideas to polish up later. I don't know what I'd do without these blank books and a really good pen.

22. I've been around more the last week or so....

Before that was in California on business for a week, but squeezed some fun in on the weekends before and after.

Visited some more cousins and got some more material for the book and got to see Monterey at last! {{{{{{swoon}}}}

That was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. The last time I was there with my brother I couldn't believe what we were seeing, it was so gorgeous. I don't have the vocabulary to properly describe it.

You know how when you come across artwork so spellbinding that you can't find the words to do it justice? You try to think of something to say but everything you come up with you just know is going to come off as over-the-top, way too smarmy and all "somebody plundered the thesaurus again" sycophant-like? I encounter that problem every time I see your work.

I've been to this thread maybe five times already trying to find the right words to tell you how cool your work is; how I love the roiling kinetic energy just barely contained in the linework that gives everything the kind of animated, dimensional cohesion that so escapes other "cartoons;" how I appreciate that it's not just the linework that sets your work apart but also the exceptional attention to detail, like the consistency of the mortar between the rocks on the walls... every little coffee bean drawn in each of several glass containers... even down to the correct serifs and the proper kerning - and even vaulted baselines (!) on the lettering in background fields...

Sacré bleu! Your mastery of detail is like channeling the Dutch Masters into the twentieth-century cartooning world. I mean I can get (quite happily) lost just wandering around in the little pen and ink worlds you create... and your work is already so alive that I can very easily play with it by adding color and animation in my mind... Ooooh, I have so much fun with your drawings!

Your work is just truly incredible. Outstanding. And yes, I will dare to say it... brilliant. Every time I come across your work I find myself hoping like crazy that you are finding outlets for your talent, not only that you are finding the audience and recognition you deserve, but that everyone else has the same opportunities I have had to appreciate and play and take delight in your wonderful creations.

Please tell me that you have a fabulous agent working to get your artwork the exposure and acclaim it deserves. Seriously. You need to be doing this professionally. No, really. Seriously. You got what it takes, girl. You do. I know.

I want to take some twine or something and wrap you with it and TAKE YOU WITH ME like a parcel. I swear, are you portable? I've missed you something fierce. I want to bring you to San Fran this next week, and to NY and to DC, where I'm going in the next month. I can't tell you how good you just made me feel. When you said "roiling kinetic energy" I just lost it in a good way because that's the thing I wanted most to project.

You never fail at making me feel good about posting things I may have questioned posting beforehand. Your sense of humor is so fast and sleek and ultra-bright. That's why I'm so flattered. Honestly after this I feel I'll never be discouraged again. I've sent "Phoebe" to 24 syndicates & I don't have an agent. You are giving me a lot of hope, DA. I did a little animation on Flash, but I would so love to animate it for real.
