Metformin
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 12:09 PM by GirlinContempt
This isn't a medical advice thread. I already have the medical advice of my endocrinologist.

Has anyone been on metformin? High dosage? Did you have good results? Any results?

I'm not taking it for diabetes.

1. Not me, but my husband takes metformin.
He's had no side effects and his sugar count is down. Good luck!

2. I'm on it
500 mg doses. I am not sure of the results yet. Have been on it one month so far & won't be seeing my endocrinologist for another month.

I will say that I'm fortunate in that I haven't yet suffered any of the potential side-effects.

Good luck to you on it. I understand that when it works, it works very well.

10. I'm not taking it for diabetes, either
Preliminary diagnosis is PCOS, but I am not suffering from hirsutism. Someone just gave me an article about Hashimoto's Disease, which seems a bit closer to my symptoms. I am going to ask about that.

My endocrinologist did say she may increase the dosage if the results aren't good enough.

I hope that it works out for you!

4. I'm on it now.
It seems to help but I still have to stay on top of my diet.

7. Are you taking it for PCOS?
A friend of mine was taking it for PCOS and had remarkable results. Lost a ton of weight, facial hair disappeared and she was able to get pregnant again.

11. Wow.
I don't have that much to lose, but yeah, something similar would be great.

That's encouraging, thank you :) I've been getting frustrated with adjusting to it and feeling like crap.

How long did it take? A year?

14. To lose that much weight, I think it was just over a year.
But the metfomin also got her menses regular again, so she was able to conceive. Shs had been wanting to have a third child, but because of the PCOS, had been unable to get pregnant.

She felt remarkably better about 60 days into taking the drug.

Good luck to you and glad they diagnosed it.

My daughter is possibly suffering from PCOS. So, we are more than likely going to go down the test/dx route within the next few months.

17. Thank you
Good luck to your daughter!

I sometimes wonder if people who say things about others weight issues ever stop to think about the numerous conditions that can cause it.

15. I would talk to your doc if you're feeling poorly
Mine specifically said she was going to start with 500 mg because most people feel like crap as they adjust. If it's effective, I'll stay at 500, but if not, she'll slowly increase the dosage so that my body can adjust.

18. She warned me too
I'd just rather get all the crap feelings out of the way at once, instead of slowly upping the dose. Maybe I'm a masochist? :)

13. That's amazing!
And that is what my doc hopes will happen for me, that I lose half my weight. About 6 years ago, my weight just started skyrocketing, even though my eating and exercise patterns hadn't changed. The worst month was when I'd gained 24 lbs - and I'd been feasting on salads and fruits almost entirely. No fast food, no sweets, nothing fried. It was confounding. They've tested me for everything. Finally hit on PCOS.

Of course, I'd like to lose half my weight, too! :-)

19. I've heard that people take it to slow the effects of aging
Diabetes is a disease that mimicks the aging process in speeded-up form, according to the protein-glucose cross-linking theory of aging. I've never tried metformin but have heard that a lot of people swear by it for slowing some of the effects of aging like sagging skin:
