Friday night music thread. What's blarin' through yer speakers?
Right now I've got The Long Winters' new cd "Putting The Days To Bed" playing. It's really, REALLY good. I recommend it.

36. No. I'll look for it. Have you ever heard "Eulogy" by any chorus?
I was with a chorus for seven years; we performed that at a memorial concert. It killed me because Randy Shilts, an amazing reporter (and author: And The Band Played On, etc.) died of AIDS shortly before this concert. I sang the whole thing to him and by the end my cheeks were completely wet and my nose dripping (sorry).

Look up "Eulogy." Oh, god.

Here . . . maybe this will work:

6. The Dixie Chicks
A group I may well have ignored, had it not been for the moment of truth uttered by Natalie Maines. Suddenly, I felt compelled to check them out.

My several wonderful years in Austin made me feel right at home with their music.

They are kick-ass musicians in every sense of the word.

I'm totally hooked.

15. I used to live near Austin,
I could always handle their music better that most country. I never thought about, but it must be the "Austin," connection.

29. I like that album, but I haven't gotten it yet
Right now - Aimee Mann (stuff from The Forgotten Arm)

I heard today:

Amy Millan - Honey From The Tombs (Very good solo effort)
The Weepies - Say I Am You (Best of 2006 contender - gets even better after repeated listens)
Beyonce - B'day (on full album listening party - it's good, but could have been a little catchier. B+.)
Justin Timberlake - FutureSex / LoveSounds (on full album listening party - it's terrible. I give it a D - tries to be sexy but completely fails. If I was a reviewer, I'd have my share of As/A+s and also Cs/Ds.)

Samples from:

STEFY - big thumbs up!

Some of the arrangements aren't quite as interesting as those on Rabbit Songs, but it's well worth buying.

45. I take that back
The first time I heard Hem's Funnel Cloud, it was at a full album listening party while I was surfing with some distractions.

Second time, on CD, it hit me just as much as Rabbit Songs did! That first song, We'll Meet Along The Way, is brilliantly out of the Simon and Garfunkel mold. The music is not as orchestrated on Funnel Cloud, which means you have to pay more attention to it.

34. Well, it's not exactly blaring, but...
"The Secret Mozart". A new CD that recorded some of Mozart's early pieces for clavichord. Most of these pieces have been recorded on the piano instead. The producer wanted to hear the pieces the way Mozart would have played and heard them. Some of the pieces were played on the clavichord Mozart himself owned and which now rests in the Mozart Museum in Salzburg.

It's terrific listening. In its low register, the clavichord sounds like a Moog synthesizer! Kewl!
