2. Eh.
People feel better about their own parenting when they criticize others.

I think it's some biological urge.

3. Well, the victims in question are a little girl vs. a grown man.
Of course the child is due a little more pity.

6. The kid was a teenager, not a "little girl."
And fear is fear.

15. This world that we live in is one big double-standard.
Fucked up? Yeah.

For instance...there's a kid at work who's starting to worry about registering with selective service and it occurred to me: women are sent into combat these days, equal opportunity and all that, but they don't have to register when they turn eighteen.

None of them should have to, IMO, but...

And young men who tom-cat around are congratulated and patted on the back...atta boy! A girl does it? *gasp!* omigod, did you hear about Mary-Sue? And yet, last I heard, it takes two.

A man who's afraid of creepy-crawlies is somehow seen as...I don't want to say less of a man but sadly, to a lot of people, that's the general impression. Doesn't make it so, though. Manhood or masculinity is a lot more than dealing with six-legged creatures without cringing.

It's fucked up.

It's also the world we live in. And it will be unless and until someone does something to change those perceptions. They've been around for so long though, it's going to take at least a generation.

25. Here's an example for you right along those lines
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 05:05 PM by skygazer
I work at a grocery store and we offer carryout service. All day long, we escort women out to their vehicles and put their groceries in the car for them.

One day, I helped a guy out who had a lot of stuff and had recently had shoulder surgery. He had no sling or brace or anything visible but was not supposed to lift anything heavy.

After I'd loaded his car, I was returning the cart when I saw two guys snickering about it. "Able bodied man getting help out to his car from a woman!" they were saying.

I told them, "You know what? That guy just had surgery on his shoulder. In addition, I help able-bodied women out all day long, women who are perfectly able to lift a fucking bag of groceries but no one makes fun of them. Why is that?"

They shut up.

29. Awwww.... blush

I hate that shit, though. I've run up against it so many times and I WILL push right back. Used to shoot pool - I'd get so much crap from guys who seemed to think there was something about the game of pool that made it impossible for a woman to play well. :wtf:

They'd very helpfully stand at the end of the table and point to a spot on a ball - "Hit it right there, sweetheart, and it should go in."

Man, I loved cleaning their clocks.

Not all women are weak. Not all men are strong. Not all women are afraid of everything. Not all men are impervious to fear. Not all women know nothing about cars. Not all men know how to rebuild an engine.

I could go on and on but I think I already have...

Hey, by the way, are you going to see Roger Waters next month? I know you don't like to go too far from home but it should be a great show.

A weatherperson should be a professional about the situation. A kid caught in the rollercoaster looked like she might have been in trouble.
