Anyone see The Descent? *SPOILERS*

I saw it this weekend, and firstly, let me say that I loved it. I haven't seen a new horror movie that was that good for a long time; I was on the edge of my seat in the theater.

However, I was slightly confused by the ending. And, after looking at imdb, I see that there were actually two different endings.

Anyway, my initial take on it was that Sarah got away and hallucinated her dead friend in the 4x4 at the very end.

But, I was just curious as to anyone else's take on it -- especially seeing as the European ending was different (anyone see that one?). And considering the fact that Sarah was hallucinating at the cabin before they even left on the expedition.

Thoughts?

You're right about the ending. The American version cut off the last few seconds of the ending, where it turns out she was just imagining escaping the cave.

Apparently they think we're too stupid to appreciate a real ending.

2. Actually, I saw that Neil Marshall (writer/director)

wrote and filmed several different endings for it. He was a little unsure himself as to how he exactly he wanted it to end.

And apparently, Lion's Gate wants to make a sequel (surprise, surprise) -- hence the change.

Personally, I liked the American ending. I thought it was pretty awesome that Sarah persevered (and got her revenge on Juno) and made it out alive.

Of course, I might have liked the downer ending too had I seen it first.

3. I didn't care that much about the ending.

Like I wrote in my review that nobody read, the ending to a movie like that is like the end of a roller coaster where you're waiting to come up to the platform and get off. By then the ending really doesn't matter. They could have done a musical number for all I cared.

That's probably why I was sort of surprised by the fact that there were multiple endings.

The rest of it was solid and intense enough that the denouement wasn't of prime importance.

7. Is this the one by Jeff Long?

I don't think they're the same.

If that's the one you're talking about, I don't think this movie was an adaptation of that book. There's nothing in the credits to that effect and while there's some very minor overlap to the basic premise, the novel by Long sounds completely and utterly different than this film.

Also, Amazon notes that the rights to the novel were sold to Warners; this movie was distributed by Lion's Gate.

That said, the Long novel sounds rather interesting. I might have to pick it up.
