4. Facebook is...
A website for college students (and now high school kids). You have a profile of yourself and you can connect with people from other colleges (or high schools) through interests, activities, hometowns, etc. It's a giant social network. :hi:

Facebook has alerted me to your new note :P

Gah. I hate this. Facebook used to be a neater, cleaner version of MySpace. Now it's all junked up with all kinds of unnecessary crap.

How? :D

Seriously, though, whenever I sign in, there's this big motherfucking "news stream," or whatever the hell it's called right in front of my face. And it won't. go. away. I want old Facebook.

I've already joined the official anti-news stream group. Almost 100,000 members in one day.

32. There's supposedly some way to do it.
Or at least to block your own stuff from going out in the news stream, though I haven't figured it out yet. The options aren't there in the controls where they say they are. x(

13. I know.
It's freaky. I don't want people to know every little thing I update, upload, or write at every moment of the day. I don't care about what one of my friends wrote on another friend's wall, I don't care who is no longer single and who is no longer in an open relationship.

Stalkers, rejoice.

19. There is evidently some way to hide it
and to disconnect yourself from the "live feeds". Does anybody know how to do this? I don't like this new BS at all. I didn't join MySpace for a reason, and if facebook tries to be a copy of myspace, I'm outta there.

24. if you view your profile
you can click on the little triangle next to the "mini-feed" headline to hide it...but if you open it up there's an "X" which gives you the option of deleting events from appearing in anyone's news feed.

yeah it's pretty stupid - there's probably a way to disable it altogether but i haven't figured it out...

25. No.
I think it silly that hundreds of thousands of people who uploaded their personal and contact information to a publicly accessible networking site are screaming that a feature they can disable violates their privacy, and are attempting to stop it by petitioning on that selfsame site.

30. Well...
don't you think that this new stuff unecessarily broadcasts everything? I mean, there are things you can put on facebook that you don't expect *everyone* to read. For example, people who are not at your school can now see what you have posted on the walls of people at your school and vice versa. Maybe people wanted to keep those two world seperate. The old way, it was a lot harder to find out something like that. I realize there was little privacy the old way, but there is much less now.

35. There's an X on every news feed item that removes it. If I don't want
Someone to see, I click the X.

29. you are correct
i've got the facebook and the only thing that bothers me about this news feed thing is that it's annoying and i don't care what other people did. i am hard to keep in touch with so i use it for exactly that. it's like kids getting mad cause they didn't get a job cause their potential employer saw their photos from last weekend plastered all over the site...

in the realm of picking and choosing your battles and what is important in life, this is not something to get upset about.

34. Not so much the privacy issue for me,
though I did joke about it.

But it's too busy for my taste...too much like MySpace. Too much junk. Sometimes I just want to check up on something without having to click through pages of unnecessary crap. :hi:

37. It is,
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 09:02 AM by deadparrot
but (from what I can see) they don't tell you that for a bunch of stuff. They just throw it at you and have you figure out how to make it disappear. I can shrink the news feed when looking at my friends' pages, but can't get rid of it; plus, I can't get rid of the news feed on the front page (if you know, please tell me). IMHO, I'm not wild about the different page design; it's more choppy and broken up...it just looks messy to me.

In the whole scheme of things, it can hardly even be called an inconvenience. And of course I wish people more passionate about "real life" stuff, but I think voicing frustration with a site that's one of the most popular on the internet is a valid conversation starter, especially in a place like the Lounge. Facebook has become a kind of pop culture thing for young adults, so I think its natural that major changes to the site would spark conversation among students. :hi:
