Saw "Little Miss Sunshine" Yesterday

Incredibly funny and creepy at the same time. At the last incredible scene, my gut was busting from laughter but with my fingers covering my eyes--unlike any movies I've ever seen. Is there some German word that means funny and creepy at he same time? This movie was it.

Grandpa knew what he was doing. He knew how creepy those beauty pageants were, and set up his naive and trusting granddaughter to disrupt and expose them for what they are. He was a cut-through-the-bullshit kind of guy. It was uncomfortable and hilarious at the same time - true humorous tension! Great little film.

2. Bingo. Steve Carell blew me away, too.

I knew he was an excellent comedic actor; I had no idea he could radiate pathos, and specifically the despair and embarrassment of a failed suicide. He was mesmerizing to watch.

4. He is on his way up

I am of the opinion that the decline of SNL and other sketch comedy shows is largely due to the ascendance of Comedy Central and The Daily Show, and their lesser-known cohorts. Most of the best comedic actors in the past 2 to 3 years are being drawn from a well not dependent on the very tired and dying SNL. Although Carell has worked well with SNL alum Will Ferrel, the bulk of the worst comedies of the past several years have been from alums of SNL/Mad TV/In Living Color. The best comedic talent is drawn elsewhere for their creative outlets.

You have to love Carell as a Proust scholar. He certainly set up the character as beautifully as you described.

...they got out to push the VW bus, and every time he'd say aloud, to no one in particular, that he was the country's preeminent Proust scholar.

I agree with you about Comedy Central. The journeyman comedians who train on the stage with groups like the Groundlings and Second City are taking advantage of the more diffuse opportunities out there, so SNL and Mad TV no longer have the market cornered on them. And man, does it show.

6. Best movie of 2006 so far.

Oh and I am 100% dead serious when I say this - it's been a shitty year for movies. Maybe the shittiest as long as I have been alive. It was great to see a wholly original movie like this. I'd describe it as Wes Anderson (of Royal Tennenbaums / Life Aquatic fame) directing National Lampoon's Vacation. I laughed my ass off at that ending. So hilarious and yet very wrong at the same time!

I loved the scene where the previously mute brother protects his sister by trying to drill some sense into the mother - such a lovely, sweet thing. "Are you authorized to be back here?" and he replied, "NO" and just kept walking to her dressing room. :thumbsup:

15. I saw it last night too.

I thought it was terrific, and so did my husband.

I agree - those child beauty pageant girls are creepy and gross. How can anyone do that to their little girls???!! Ick. I loved Olive's routine. Despite what stick-up-butt icky beauty pageant lady thought, it was the only truly innocent part of the whole thing.

The last scene where they all came up on the stage and danced with her almost made me cry. That's what the real meaning of love is - sharing someone else's pain and humilation so they won't feel so bad about themselves. And the rest of the awful "normal" world be damned. Just be yourself, stick together, and don't worry about the rest of all the superficial asshats out there. That's a great lesson.

fuckin great! the "last" scene really made the movie. it's so tempting to post a spoiler, but it wouldn't even come across properly, you just gotta see it! i was in tears i was laughing so hard at the end. but there was also so much more to it than that, i felt like a prevert watching the earlier part of the pagent.
