Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 01:28 PM by ohiosmith
I just don't like it. And for those who do like country music, denigrate means 'put down'."

Bob Newhart born today in 1929

2. Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and helicopter pilot
I love Newhart but did want to point that out.

Oh and for non-country fans, Kris Kristofferson is a songwriter and kind of singer when he isn't busy killing vampires.

3. I'm not too crazy about it myself
But I hear a LOT of it. I can usually tune it out pretty well except when someone puts it on in my car...AND DOESN'T CHANGE IT BACK.

There's nothing, and I mean NOTHING, more disconcerting than turning on the radio, expecting Queen or something...and hearing Shania Twain. Or whoever...

He doesn't even have to speak, he's just got that 'look'...that hopeless, helpless look.

10. I actually listen to it a lot
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 02:09 PM by mycritters2
It freaks out everyone who knows me. I can sing along with all the songs, and I always have it on in my car. I don't like the songs with real sappy patriotic lyrics, and there are WAAAAY too many of those. But a lot of it has clear ties to rock-a-billy and southern blues--hell, a lot of it IS rockabilly or blues. I think it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

The other thing I notice is how many of the songs are about being well, nobody and nothing. Lyrics like "Let's get drunk and be somebody" or others that talk about working hard and getting no real recognition. I often think, if the Democrats would speak to this sense of disaffection and abandonment by the culture, we could turn the South blue again.

But, instead, we post about how we don't like the music, and assume that people who listen to it don't know what "denigrate" means.

What the hell, it's not like these people get to vote or anything. :eyes:

11. I LOVE Bob Newhart
:loveya:

A friend in high school signed my yearbook thusly:

"To the girl who's watched FAR too much Bob Newhart and David Letterman." I considered that a super compliment. :D

12. Ah, the Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart....
With a background in accounting & advertising, his persona was nervous & slightly neurotic--with an occasional surreal touch. I remember liked his standup routine a lot, although I didn't follow his TV shows religiously. )But the last episode of "Newhart" was worth catching.)

Thanks to TV variety shows & the radio, we were exposed to lots of standup in my childhood. The Borscht Belt vets taught us a bit of Yiddish--even down in Texas. Nichols & May were more intellectual. Perhaps Jonathan Winters was my fave.

I love (good) country music but won't hold that remark against him. Read more here: www.bobnewhart.com/index.cfm

26. maybe more like Johnny Carson asking Jim Stafford if the people...
in his sleepy little town got TV, "Oh yeah, they get it...they just don't understand it..."

oh, and Happy B-Day, Bob

I remember when Mary Lou said
"You wanna walk me home from school"
And I said, "Yes, I do"
She said, "I don't have to go right home
And I'm the kind that likes to be alone
As long as you would"
I said, "Me, too"

And so we took a stroll
Wound up down by the swimmin' hole
And she said, "Do what you want to do"
I got silly and I found a frog
In the water by a hollow log
And I shook it at her
And I said "This frog's for you"

She said, "I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
You fool, you fool
I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
Like I want to be loved by you"

Well, I think of that girl from time to time
I call her up when I got a dime
I say, "Hello, baby"
She says, "Ain't you cool"
I say, "Do you remember when
"And would you like to get together again"
She says, "I'll see you after school"

I was shy and so for a while
Most of my love was touch and smile
Til she said, "Come on over here"
I was nervous as you might guess
Still looking for somethin' to slip down her dress
And she said, "Let's make it perfectly clear"

She said, "I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
You fool, you fool
I don't like spiders and snakes
And that ain't what it takes to love me
Like I want to be loved by you"

maybe, ya'think ~ :-)

18. I like heartfelt country
Not the blatantly corporate or jingoistic stuff. Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Sugarland, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, George Strait, etc are making good country. And I enjoy much of the traditional stuff. Wouldn't call country my absolute favorite genre, though.

29. He was great in concert
I saw BN in concert in 2002(?) at the Bass Perfomance Hall in Fort Worth. And yes, he did a few of the mandatory phone conversation routines. :)

Guys like him are a really good reminder that comedy doen't neccesarily have to have a "fuck" every third word or a "fuck" joke every three minutes.

Would be nice if hte next generation of comedians tried that... but I ain't holding my breath.
