Looking for movie making software....

I recently downloaded Windows Movie Maker and it seems simple enough to use. It has all sorts of stuff to put digital pic on and then ahve music underneath while there are different ypes of fading in and out effects.
The problem is everytime I try to add an effect the damn program shuts down. It's is rather annoying and I am about to uninstall it, but I want to see if anyone knows of any type of software that can do these functions.
Since getting our didgtal cam I want to put pictures into some kind of slide show with music and effects and burn them to disc to send to family and friends.
Anyone have anything for little ol' me? :-)

I recently switched to Vegas from Adobe Premiere and Avid. I can't say enough nice things about it. It's an amazing application and the most rock solid video editor I've ever used.
