How about a new round of introductions?
GD's down and we have a lot of newbies...so...

Hi there! I'm John, unapologetic liberal, husband to Ms Uly, future adoptive father and chalk-covered math teacher. I have a mountain of dirty clothes stinking up my utility room.

Who are you? What's up in your world?

3. Welcome to DU AWD
:hi: - funny post!

I'm Teresa, a very pissed off liberal but also hopeful that with the Internet and various groups working - this admin will go down in the biggest uproar with all the truth about things being loudly spewed.

I'm also at work and busier than hell (but very grateful for a job!!!) - but I sneak over here every chance I get to see what's going on and what I've missed. Live right across the river from Cincinnati - in Kentucky - and Cincinnati has got to be the most REPUKE town in the World!!!!

trof=the retired old fart
I'm a retired airline pilot, married to Mrs.t. for 34 years, and we live with Nasha-the-Dog (elderly German Shepherd lady) and Ace-the-Cat (middle-aged former-male felinus noire).
Ask me about my grandson.
Don't expect me to take up for the south in north-south/Confederate flag flame wars.
I finally got too smart for that.
My favorite emoticon is ;-) but if we had a tongue-in-cheek, that would be it.
I am Leo and my favorite color is burnt umber with just a hint of magenta.
;-)
and I replied to the wrong post.
DAMN!

2. Newbie here
Just a regular old redheaded Texas gal here, trying to fight the good fight here in Austin. I'm not chalk-covered; I work for a very large computer company. No mountain of dirty clothes, but my house is an ongoing construction project.

Former Republican, turned flaming liberal marching-in-the-streets activist. Unflinchingly against the current mis-administration and ready to discuss my views at the drop of a hat. Just ask my family & friends. Those who are still around, anyway...! ;)

I lurk for the most part, since I should actually be working. But, it helps pass the day and I learn something to boot.

Rock on!

and i am one of the newbies. i made my first post on AWD's announcement thread. for years i have been out-of-step charlie in a repug world never knowing there was a forum for like minded people. oddly enough, the free republic brought me here. buzzflash had a link last week to a freeper forum highlighting some disgust with gee duh-bya and they thought one contributor was a dissenter and told him to go back to du. a bit farther down i found out what du meant and the rest is history.

i am an architect with my own small firm in the chitown area and have gotten very little done since i found du, hahahaha. so much more interesting than just reading the progressive news websites.

good luck AWD and btw: gd is back up.

Pleased to meet you :-)

60. them wide open spaces
Sutherland is the least populated region in all of europe... with less than 2 people per sq. Km including the villiages. It is the least damaged coastline i've yet seen in a first world country outside australia/NZ where beaches have no footprints on them and there is no crime and no violence in the people or culture.

To the north of me is not another living soul for 5000 miles over the north pole to the north coast of russia... to the south, wilderness for 40 miles... to the west, say 500 people to the atlantic ocean and to the east 14000 or so in caithness. It is the purest (inhabitable) power place on earth... as the high himalayas is not a living place... and also a bit dangerous when maoists take hostages... It reminds me of the american southwest. I've heard about the scottish highlands my whole life, yet never in my wildest dreams did i think it was this sweet a place... tolkein has left his name in many hotel registers round these parts, and clearly inspired the "shire" after the northwest highlands... and harry potter's hogwarts also.

After decades in: los angeles-NYC-chicago-seoul-london having ocean cliffs out the front door is a relief... no hatred... ocean mist. :-) The "coast highway" is a single lane road, and i have to drive for an hour on single lane roads to get to "artery-britain" I wholly understand how the nordic countries with their low populations have such high quality of life, as this region has had more contact with denmark, norway and russia than England, by north sea fishing fleets.. the moscow symphony orchestra played thurso last year... Ferry boats can take me from here to the faroe islands, orkney, shetland and norway.

Though its remote, got broadband, and first world life... it is a priviledge to live in what would be a national park were it inside america... foolishly, the scottish executive does not give this region national park status.
?
Now your turn... what are you up to in the USA?

peace.

That's a real bone of contention here. Southport was a Lancashire town for literally, hundreds of years when it was rezoned to be part of Merseyside at somepoint in the 70s. A lot of the old-timers still like to think of themselves as Lancastrians but I don't mind being part of Merseyside.

I'm 45 and don't like to talk about myself. But I work online so I'm online all the time, have 4 grown kids and an almost grown husband. I'm a rural liberal Democrat who thinks gaining a concensus to win is more important than my ideology. I think Bush manipulates the war on terror and Iraq was a war for oil but that terrorists are real and that we have to defend against them but that we also cause the problem because of our globalization and militaristic schemes and that a Kucinich peace plan is best but most Americans will not buy it in my lifetime.

And if you can figure me out, good to ya! I can't.

They're getting fresh baked cookies, goodies they need, a letter where they get to pick whether I adopt them as a son, nephew, brother, or the kid down the street who stops by to chat. I'm also sending some of my beanie babies so they can have something to give the kids.

I've been fighting with the Fire Marshall in Austin over the legality of locking in legislators after they've been dragged there by coercion. They tell me locking them in is "ceremonial". I call it "false imprisonment". So much to say, so little time. :hi:

23. Okay.......
I'm a newbie here, older than I think most of the posters (mid-50's, sometimes forget). Kids in college, one is ascribing to libertarian idiocy but otherwise good kid. Both currently studying music. I really like classical music, and it's even more fun to perform. Recently moved back to Southern Cal after a long absence (try 45 years), lived previously in a, ummmmm, heartland city where nobody ever moves out and not that many people move in - everybody knew everybody. Anyway, they did have a decent symphony orchestra, & I sang in the symphonic chorus - tremendous fun! Professional classic instrumental musicians are strange people, but fun nevertheless. We did the usual Beethoven's 9th, Mahler's 2nd, Verdi Requiem - and some slightly odder ones as well - Beethoven's Mass in C minor & the Choral Fantasy (beautiful, beautiful piece), Hayden's Thersien Messe, Rachmaninoff's Vespers (where I got to sing the basso profundo line!). Anyway, now you know what my fav hobby is. My daughter sings opera, & I keep after her about doing a duet - but - there are very few duets for basso profundo & coloratura soprano. In my worklife I'm an epidemiologist - a practitioner and researcher of medicine upon populations (rather than a clinician, who practices medicine upon individuals). It's fascinating stuff also.....
And politically, I'm a radical left-wing, idealistic dalai lama type....my first presidential primary vote was for Gene McCarthy...and it seems that how it's been ever since. I'd like to vote for Kucinich, but he probably won't get out of the primary, California has closed primaries, & I'm a registered Green (see what I mean about left-wing idealist?). Also, just to confuse me even more, my wife is something like sixth in succession to the crown of an Asian nation that no longer has an enthroned royal, so she has that whole conservative royal thing going. What I get for joining Peace Corps! But she's a classic conservative -preserve the culture, uphold tradition, all that.

29. Hello, my name is Alice, and I'm a DU-aholic
Until I found this place I thought I was going insane.

I'm 54, a secretary and a published romance novelist. I converted my dh of 24 years from the errors of conservatism, and now he's more liberal than I am.

I live in Oaktown (Oakland, CA), home of the courageous Barbara Lee and that glorious marquee on the Grand Lake Theatre. I garden, raise orchids, cook, and have two gorgeous pet corn snakes.

This place is eating into my writing time, but I love it!

I'm told I look better, and even taller, since I quit smoking.

I am now listening to the SARS Toronto concert - took off work early just for it. They don't know it - ssshhhh. They are in between bands right now, so are showing some video. Almost half a million people. Pretty impressive.

Catherine Mary is what's on my birth certificate, and today's my 41st birthday.

When I'm at home here in Southern California I am owned by my two cats Muffin and Mogli, and by my two rabbits Justin and Elizabeth.

I'm an office manager by day, and an empty nester at night. I'm very proud of my amazing 23 y/o daughter who lives quite close and we are very tight.

I love politics but hate Republicans, I'm spiritual but can't stand fundies, I love basketball but I hate Lakers fans.

I get as little exercise as possible and eat whatever I want because life is short and uncertain.

I love coffee, beer SportsCenter and the Simpsons, I'm lucky to work with people I mostly like and do a job that pays well and demands little, everyone says my taste in music sucks but I like it, and I approach the world with an incongruous mixture of childlike wonder, cynicism and misanthropy.

They say it's never too late to have a happy childhood and I'm having mine now. After many years of being a struggling single parent I'm able to spoil myself and I do. But I must be a pain in the ass because I'm single and have always been.

I love DU and all the DUers. :loveya: If it weren't for all you good people I'd be more pessimistic than I already am.

Thans for listening, and we now return you to your regularly scheduled Lounge.

36. Hello....
My name is MJ and I live in St Louis. I am probably further to the left than some in the DU.

I work for an insurance company and am thankful to have a job that provides health insurance for its employees.

I loath and detest the current administration and wasn't too happy with how conservative Bill Clinton was either.

My current cause de jour is telling as many working people about the assault on overtime pay. I have worked too many overtime hours not to get paid for it.

Other than politics I am interested in science fiction (love Star Wars). I am counting down the days to the release of Return of the King.

I also LOVE the Grateful Dead and like Phish.

Hello from Park Slope, Brooklyn, one of the world's greatest neighborhoods. I've been lurking for a while and have fallen in love with you folks. I'm a little older -- Strom was only 50 when I was born. I'm in love and am planning a Canadian wedding with my long-time partner. I'm also a Missouri J-school grad, a horse lover and a karmically challenged fan of the Buffalo Bills.

And I'm happy not to be a DU virgin anymore.

I'm a flaming homo though I don't advertise the fact in conventional ways (in public), and I'm desperately single while at the same time criticizing the gay community for every little excuse I can think of because I'm so desperate. This makes me pathetic.

Hello all,

I love this place. I mostly lurk and catch up on news and opinion. It's great to see a place where radical ideas get posted as often as conventional ones. We owe it to ourselves and our children to insure that the Internet becomes the kind of communications medium that we would like to see it grow into and this place to me is one of the finest examples of that idea realized online.

I am a transplant from FL who now lives in NC. I am an eternal optimist and firmly believe that its really all about the possiblities. What we dream can be realized, we all have the power to make it so. Be heard, vote. Don't just speak your mind, free your mind and open it up to the visions that you can create and then use your vision to inspire others.

Hi, I'm MrsGrumpy.

Wife to Leonard (who some would believe is a blue collar "dumbas")
Mother to Nicole (Speller No. 107, National Spelling Bee 2002, and I love sticking that in conversations with cashiers)
Mother to James (an exceptional 4 year old, who sports a Dean sticker on his truck bumper, by choice, not coercion)

Besotted with Jessie (the wonder Sheltie) and Merlin (the extreme fat kitty)

I am for getting people to think beyond class definitions, in order to plan a more effective takeover in 2004!

It's good to know you all, some more so than others.;-)

Edited to add smiley so all would know I said the last thing good naturedly, because I am truly a nice person, unless you piss me off. Ask PassingFair

I'm a writer and an actor with a day job, I did a play last January about Librarians vs. the FBI and 13 members of the ACLU showed up, which was really cool!

I don't have a thick skin, I never will, and you're likely to hear me piping up and I see someone being picked on. I've also been known to don a tinfoil hat, but I think David Icke goes too far.

83. Hi!
I'm LWolf for the moment, and this is my 1910th post.

I'd like to change my DU name though...it's what I ended up with after several frustratingly unsuccessful attempts, and it's not really what I wanted. A poll, perhaps? Any suggestions for a new DU name?

I'm 43, single, mother of 2 grown sons and one 3 year-old grandson.

I'm a former librarian and an elementary school teacher.

I'm a rabid environmentalist. I love gardening, hiking, my horses, dog, and cats, reading, isolation, and music. I'm happiest out in the hills, where there are no roads, no power poles, no people.

I am fiercely independent, a staunch liberal, and an unrepentant idealist.

Yes, I'm a newbie, and damn proud of it! I live in Independence, MO and am currently studying pre-law. I work as a waitress, two kids, one a future filmmaker and the other a highly energetic 13 year old in the throes of early teendom. I'm stressed, overworked, and a passionate American in desperate need of reassurance that my beloved America will survive its attempted destruction by a group of wild-eyed, power hungry homophobics.

As you probably deduced my avatar, I live in the Los Angeles area.

I'm pretty left of center with a few libertarian streaks. My pet issue is separation of church and state. Mrs. Bombay is quite liberal as well. We are DINKs (dual-income, no kids) and love it! Married two years.

I have an ecclectic personality, with a wide range of interests; I enjoy biking and hiking just as much as playing hold 'em poker! College radio and classic rock. I'm somewhat of a film snob but also an incurable sports nut.

99. Ramsey here
Princess Ramsey to most! People don't seem to understand why an heir to the throne such as myself would be a liberal Democrat. Yet, even we elitists can have morals.

Watching tonight's PBS special about Watergate, one is reminded that it's all about the integrity, the honesty and the ethical foundation. And that the Republicans have a very very short attention span and haven't learned a thing. Some of those dudes are STILL trying to defend Nixon, who was caught as about as red-handed as one possibly can be. What a telling documentary of Republican anti-scruples. The ends have always justified the means for these assholes. They honestly think they are all above the law because their cause is so god-damned righteous. And they still think it, witness the GW Bush entourage.

Well, that's one introduction. Shall I try again?

102. DU Keeps My Breath Fresh
I don't get into Manhattan much anymore, but those people impress me as sophisticated. I still can't figure out why the Trade Center was hit, it wasn't aimed at New Yorkers. It couldn't have been.

I don't have a cat, and I want one. And a house. The cat is more important than the house. I do not wish to get married again, what a bad experience. And it's all my fault, if you ask her. She got the wok; it was right in the settlement papers.

One of these years I'm going to figure out what I'm good at. I like absurd jokes, but not long walks on the shore. If either of my government disability claims goes through I may move back to Los Angeles. It's a very undemanding lifestyle, and the state is full of Democrats.

After five years I got my brains back. If you who know what that means, you know what that means. My life today not beyond my wildest dreams. There's some good stuff being written these days: it's intimidating, especially because it's being ignored.

The Bush presidency is coarsening Americans to the point of ugliness. I have dual citizenship and I can leave. The thought is always in the back of my head.

107. I have been here forever ...
I was lurking, but rarely posting, for a very long time. Back when the Freepers thought we were just 12 or 13 guys posting with multiple screennames in order to make it look like there were lots more of us that there really was. I remember when Repub used to post alot, and the fun we had playing with him. I also remember when you had to PM Pat to get ignored for keys to the gallery instead of PM'ing GregW to get ignored for keys to the gallery. (just kidding ya' Greg)

I'm your basic white, male, Christian, 36 y.o., business suit wearin', straight, married with two kids, liberal. I sometimes pipe up when posters try to portray all Christians as being fundy assholes, but I would defend mischaracterizations of other religions and groups as well.

My favorite rock band is Yes - which can be a sourse of endless persecution, just like being a liberal. I live in Freepville, Georgia, where voting Conservative isn't just a tradition, its

I sometimes think the things I post make me sound like some kind of choirboy. I am an idealist, and that is reflected in my beliefs about government, religion, and relationships.

131. Didn't understand a fair portion of your post,
but I sympathise with your plaint about being painted with the fundy brush. It's a sneaky trick by the conservatives, though, that was very obvious when I lived in the heartland - okay, so maybe it wasn't sneaky. The fundys call themselves "Christian" and use the term as one of exclusion - you episcopalians out there, forget it! Unless you're born again, you're not Christian. And Unitarians, you're not even in the same universe. To me it confirms the intolerant nature of the beast.

141. Hey, all! Just noticed this post, so here goes...
I'm KMLA. In case you are wondering what the acronym represents - it's not the call letters for a west of the Mississippi radio station. It stands for "Kiss My Liberal Ass". This is usually said in response to some one who says "...if it weren't for those damned liberals."

Just a hair over 40. Two young kids who are terrific, and a wife who rolls her eyes at me when I start ranting about the latest machinations of the BFEE. Every now and then, I'll catch her with her guard down, and she'll say, "Really? They really did that?" She typically does vote for the left, though.

Live in central Indiana. Not the most progressive place in the world, but not a bad place to grow up and raise kids.

Have an advancing forehead (read as receding hairline), and drive a mini-van (American made, of course).

I listen to i.e.America network during most of the day, but not really enjoying it as much since Peter Werbe was replaced.

I'm bummed that of the 3 people who represent me in Congress, 2 of them are Repugs, and the one who isn't a repug acts like one about half of the time. I think Senator Bayh suffers from cranial-rectal insertion syndrome at times. Oh, well. Maybe he'll see the light someday.

Hate network TV - except for CSI (Vegas, not Miami). Love that show.

My hope and dream is to someday create a thread that gets the flame designation (30+ posts). But I want it to be on a real topic, not a puff-n-fluff subject....

144. Hi all,
I'm new to DU, and ever thankful to my sister for introducing me to such a wonderful site. She directed me this way since I'm a Will Pitt fan, so he should share the credit for my being here.

As an underpaid, under appreciated state employee (with an attitude), I spend my free time either ranting about the current administration destroying our nation, or hanging out with my 4 kids and 3.99 grandkids (another one is due any moment).

I've been married nearly 25 years to what I thought was a wonderful man, until he came out of the closet as a republican! :puke: Now I spend a lot of time trying to get him to see the errors of his way. I've told him to repent before he spends eternity in hell for following that satanic shrub (and watching Faux news). On the other hand, my liberal mother and sisters seem to think he is doing this to drive me crazy...they may be right. Insanity I can handle, republicans I can't.

This site has given me hope for our country since there are so many enlightened folks here. I hope the wisdom, and intelligence, of this site spreads to the rest of the US population and King George, the usurper, is ousted ASAP. Unfortunately, I suspect the evil-doer will come up with more political machinations in order to steal the next election.

146. Hey I am Mike
I just moved to Tallahassee Florida from Springfield,Missouri. I moved here to go to Florida State and get my PhD in Religion. I am an athiest (insert athiest student of religion jokes here). My hobbies include collecting vintage telephones, collecting and restoring fountain pens, and seeing how far to the left I can get before I hit my head on the far side of the pool. I enjoy the movies of John Waters, and I was raised to despise anyone left of Ronald Reagan and came to my senses as a highschool student. The first presidential election in which I was elegible to vote, I voted for Clinton in his first term.

I am gay, and my (euphemism) Clint came with me to Tallahassee where he works for a gay-freindly company. I learned to enjoy being an activist when I joined my college's LGBT organization. I have become an armchair activist of late and am looking to change that. Thats Me!!

150. Hi to all.
:hi:

I'm PunkinPi, a female (I think my login may have confused some people). I am 26 years old and live in MD. Currently I am another one of Mr. Bush's unemployed, but I'm back in school and will graduate in December.

When I grow up, I would like to be a writer. Thanks to the DU, I have found some sanity in the world again. Peace to all.

BTW, Ulysses, methinks this was a cool idea!

I'm 16, liberal, cute (had to throw that in!), intelligent, nice, etc. I'm a student so I may sound a bit stupid sometimes! :hi: Of course you may visit my under construction website www.maggister.com

Not that I'm advertising or anything. :D

on edit: Been here since October 2001, I stand for peace love and understanding. I think we should all be working together instead of driving eachother apart. Yeah that's it, maybe i'm what Freepers consider a bleeding heart liberal.

171. Hi there, new DU-ers!
I'm Aristus. A 34 year old white male. I belong to several DU sub-groups. I'm a member of our small but growing group of liberal Christians who hate what the fundys are doing to the perception of our faith. I'm a peace-loving Gulf War veteran. I'm married to a Republican (a wonderful, smart, funny, sexy, good-hearted woman, so why she's a Republican is a mystery. I adore her.)And I'm a reformed Republican supporter who voted for Bush Sr. Twice. GAG! I'm now a die-hard Democrat, and a liberal till I die! I love everyone here at DU, and enjoy meeting more friends.

Here's to you all! :toast:

172. Flower Power
Hi, I'm pretty new here. Came to DU a lot over the last year just to read and only started doing the forums a few weeks ago.
Middle aged, former hippie, veteran of the VietNam anti-war movement. Single Mom of two kids, boy in college, girl in HS and feel the same now that I did back in the late 60s and early 70s...frustrated, angry and feeling our country is going in the wrong direction.
I live and work in upstate New York; full-time for a school doing PR, and gifted/talented education; part time as a free-lance writer and desktop publisher.
That being said, I can't spell worth a crap.
I love my mini-Schnauzer Lexi and traveling, especially to civilized countries.
It's nice to have a place to come and chat with like minded people.
LuLu

176. I'm Matt
I'm a 27-year old male from the Pennsylvania suburbs of Philadelphia. I am an only child and have a college degree in economics - but I'm out of practice as I've been focusing on a career in web design or computer programming. If I can, though, my ideal would be to run a family business. I'd like to be my own boss. My biggest interests are MUSIC!!!! (my life,) politics, computers, things related to computers like software, reading, the paranormal, and weather. My favorite music artists range from The Beatles to Elvis to The Corrs to The Dixie Chicks to George Strait to Michelle Branch to Norah Jones to Frank Sinatra to The Bangles to The Police to Aretha Franklin to The Indigo Girls to Stone Temple Pilots. I'm a huge dog and Christmas lover. Even though I love Christmas, I'm a non-practicing Catholic. I am a very proud liberal and support Kucinich for President, though I really like Dean and also like Kerry. I will vote for whomever we nominate, though.

185. Cool idea for a thread, ulysses
I'm Peter, former scientist turned software engineer. A politics junkie who can barely stand to listen to the news anymore, it is so depressing to me. Two years of Bush was about all I could take.

Grew up in Chicago, spent many years roaming the country (Houston, Los Angeles, Honolulu) before settling down in San Antonio several years ago (hopefully for a long time to come) with the most wonderful woman in the world.

I see my main political mission is to keep the left and center-left anti-Bush forces unified through the next election. So perhaps I'm not as realistic as I normally pride myself on being. ;-)

Oh, and I'm a moderator here at DU in my spare time. :-)

:hi:

and I, for one, appreciate your efforts there, and here, as a Mod.
