Tom Cruise (finally) apologizes to Brooke Shields
This either smacks of a publicity stunt OR a 12-step program.
I had been a lifelong fan of Tom Cruise...but his dismissal and trivialization of something as serious as postpartum depression reeks and certainly changed my opinion dramatically of the man.

"He came over to my house, and he gave me a heartfelt apology," Shields said Friday during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno . "And he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened.

"And through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was. And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."

"It is true that his friendship with Ms. Shields has been mended," spokesman Arnold Robinson said in a statement. "He has not changed his position about antidepressants, which as evidenced by the black label warnings issued by the FDA on these types of drugs, are unhealthy."

Shields, who wrote Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression, has dismissed the actor's remarks as a "ridiculous rant" and "a disservice to mothers everywhere."

1. I wonder if Lil Miss Scientology had a bout of postpartum-depression
and Scientology couldn't cure it.

8. That's what I'm betting.
Maybe he's gotten it into his thick head that his image needs mending--if that's possible!

12. From giving birth to a PILLOW?
That's one sensitive young lady, then!!!

I remain convinced "it" was a pillow (they had to hunt around to find a spare baby that could 'pass' as theirs, which is why you haven't seen the kid yet)...and did you know that SURI means PICKPOCKET in Japanese??

20. That would be a pretty ridiculous tinfoil notion...
...if we were talking about almost anyone else.

But considering WHO is being discussed here, it would not
surprise me one bit. Not even a little.

And the 'pickpocket' thing: Holy Crap!

23. Doesn't mean what they said it means in Hebrew, either
But maybe it's a special code word in the ritual language of the Thetan killers.

3. Who says Tom Cruise can't act ?
"And through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was. And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."

4. This ignorant attack on women seeking appropriate treatment...
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 12:35 PM by hlthe2b
for post-partum depression was the singe Cruise idiocy that most infuriated me.

And while I have no intention of defending HIM, it is not clear WHEN he made the apology. On edit, this article DOES say he made the apology recently--- a previous article I read did not make that clear... So, it does smack as "VERY CONVENIENT"

6. He apologized to Brooke Shields for the same reason that
Mel Gibson apologized wholesale for his anti-semitic rant: Their agents told them to.

My cynicism knows no bounds . . .

17. Little Suri does, apparently. And they supposedly had it
cast in bronze.

It's a good laugh for anyone who knows what a baby's first poop is really like.
It's a greenish black tar-like substance, meconium, not a big curly dog turd.

I'd suggest the baby turd is as real as the baby.

9. Both, IMO--publicity stunt AND a 12-step program
The 12 Steps are not the usual ones, this is 12 steps to getting your Q rating out of the toilet. 12 steps to convincing people that you aren't an object of scorn/pity/hatred.

Talk about a guy who spent the last year and a half stepping on his crank....!!!! He's the poster boy for 'middle aged crazy' male menopause!

10. Of corse Tom is sorry, he's managed to get all the women against him while
publically humiliating Ms. Shields stating what he knows about what the women/ladies go thru, that was fucking totally ignorant.

15. My money's on the publicity stunt
>This either smacks of a publicity stunt<

Tom Cruise is now being backed by a private group to finance upcoming films. I'm sure that their tolerance of his diarrhea of the mouth is nonexistent, because they'll lose their shirts. Paramount fired his ass because his comments and his behavior cost them money.

I don't know Brooke Shields. I'd like to hope that she is the kind of person that would reject any financial overtures made with the "apology". The press announcement alone makes me suspicious.

16. My money's with you. :)
I don't know whether Shields would take a bribe, but it seems likely that someone else wrote the press release and she decided not to disagree. In her defense, she was pretty gracious to Cruise, even when he insulted her. I would have used much harsher language.

19. My take on it: Damage Control.
Mr. Blockbuster doesn't think he's got the goods to go independent, so he's doing damage control. He should have apologized long ago if he wanted the court of public opinion back on his side.

21. Supposedly Sumner Redstone's wife was the deciding
factor that got Tom booted from Paramount, and she began to actively dislike the man when he attacked Brooke Shields/mothers everywhere.

So. While Mr. Cruise was impervious to any moral argument to apologize, when his $$$-making ability was jeopardized by his release from Paramount, probably all his hangers-on who make a nice salary off Tom's career ganged up on Tom and told him to apologize or they'd do a Skittles on him and kick his ass.

22. He looses his cushy contract then says he's sorry
But hasn't changed his mind about post partum and antidepressants??? Sounds more like he's missing his contract than his friendship with Brooke.
