As sun sets on summer, share your memories
Did you have a good summer?

What were some of the highlights?

What are you still going to squeeze in?

What are you sorry you missed?

1. I'm sorry I missed
most of the summer. A few bad months of illness and hospitalization. BUT the BEST thing about this past Spring was the birth of my FIRST grandchild ... a girl. Ella.

I was well enough to travel to Ontario to see her a couple of times and I'm going again in a couple of weeks.

I'm sorry I missed the MI get together with some MI DU'ers.
I'm sorry I missed the OH get together with DU'ers from many parts.

I'm not sorry that I've regained my health and I'm back with a vengeance.

What a thought provoking thread, thanks!

and my two young daughters absolutely loved it. We didn't tell them anything about the trip at all, so they were really surprised when we got on a plane and especially when they realized where they were going.

3. I'd have to say no, it's been a pretty rotten summer
Building friendships here has been the highlight, I think. As for what else I'm going to sneak in, well, tomorrow I'm going to try and go to the Balloon Classic if it doesn't get rained out. They canceled tonight's glow, so...we'll see. There are a lot of things I'm sorry I missed. No baseball games. I wanted to get up to Coors when the Cubs were in town a few weeks ago but couldn't. I haven't even been to a Sky Sox game and that park's only about 15 minutes away.

*sigh*

Next year...

4. It was a good, if short, summer....
though the weather was too hot for most of it, and we did have some moments of struggle.

I turned 40 this summer, which hit me as both exciting and frightening, and I'm not sure I've entirely adjusted yet.

My oldest turned 19, got a fantastic job and a beautiful apartment with a view of the Boise River, both of which she gave up to move to another state with her boyfriend - there has been some emotional turmoil over her situation and her decisions, but I try to keep a good thought.

I developed a pleasant routine with my younger two children, such as outdoor lunches together frequently, weekly trips to the public library following my little girl's gymnastics lessons, and long afternoons looking at cookbooks and letting them help me with supper. I loved those days and moments, but I also enjoy the shift of routines that comes with the start of school.

We took a road trip to Minnesota - our fourth annual road trip - where we had a wonderful time, but not nearly enough time to do everything we wanted to do. I met another DUer and would have loved to meet others. My family spent some time in the breathtaking Clemens/Munsinger Gardens in St. Cloud (I got some fantastic pictures, if anyone would like to see them), cozy family evenings at my parents' house and my husband's parents' house, shopping, visiting, and attending the incomparable Minnesota State Fair.

What am I sorry I missed? More playtime get togethers with friends and their children. Swedish egg coffee at the Fair.

6. My dear prolesunited........
My summer has been interesting, to say the least! I would say on the whole that it has been good.

The highlight for me was my trip to Ohio where I got to meet many DU'ers!

Nothing else even comes close to how much fun I had there......

On the downside, I have had some personal difficulties.......see my thread, here:

Interesting thread, this one of yours!

7. Thanks for asking.... but I've had better summers!
Did you have a good summer? NO... it was depressing. And too damn hot.

What were some of the highlights? The best part was having time to do whatever I wanted. We took the dogs for more training classes and a couple of competitions. That part was fun.

What are you still going to squeeze in? Maybe some pool time if it's warm enough.

What are you sorry you missed? Going on vacation... but I made the decision not to go, so I can't have regrets.

12. it really is amazing
I was expecting to like it, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. It's really charming, particularly the further you get away from the grand canal and St. Mark's (though those are great too). It was so easy and fun to get lost there :)

Once spent 10 days there ...

oh, i'm jealous :) We had a couple of days and a couple of nights. But I'd love to go back ...

We definitely want to go to Venice someday soon.

Last year was Cancun and this October it's Maui. Once the mortgage is paid off, we'll have so much money to travel. Sure, we don't have a very fancy or big house, but my goal is to spend as much time away from it as possible.

11. What the hell was that humongous mass of hot humid air in July? It moved
from the western U.S. to the eastern U.S. and then back to the west again. It was like something out of a science fiction movie. On Saturday, July 22, the temperature was 122 degrees in Death Valley, and 108 degrees at my house in San Diego, a place which rarely goes under 40 or over 100. And the humidity was like a steambath, in full sun too. Nothing like that has ever happened - what was that all about anyway?

16. Well, the highlight of my summer was
experiencing the joy my 13-year-old felt at being plucked out of line at a concert, taken backstage to meet her favorite band, being treated to a spot at the very front of the stage, and getting more autographs/pictures after the show. She's a good kid, very quiet, only a couple of close friends - one of those kids who doesn't often get any recognition. So being given the VIP treatment like that was so awesome. I was thrilled for her.

20. On the whole, no
Did you have a good summer? I've had better.

What were some of the highlights? The Ohio meetup was fun and getting to know some of the people behind the avatars has been great.

What are you still going to squeeze in? There's no squeezing anything in. Jobhunting is my full-time job now and will be even more critical when the temp assignment I'm on ends this Friday.

What are you sorry you missed? I'm sorry I missed yet another year without a vacation of any kind. It's been 10 years. :(

I believed that the summer was going to be the beginning of better times, but they've just gotten worse. I hope now that the fall will bring the changes I desperately need.

43. To all of you, my thanks
Yes, things are that bad. I'm trying to decide if I used my last $ trying to make it work here or if I use my last $ putting everything in storage (24 years of my life). After that, I move to Portland to live in my parents' third bedroom with my two cats. They hate cats. I feel as though I've failed on every level, the only exception being my daughter. And still, I've failed her too. It's 50/50 whether or not she can return to college in 3 weeks. I need a hug, and I need prayers.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I'm sorry. :(

I'm not done with summer yet (but then I never am). I like the heat. And this summer seems short because I had to search for a new flat, then move. So I lost a month. Therefore, summer will be extended this year to about June 2007.

Did you have a good summer? Yes, it was better than most...the only gripe I have is the heat. Went to a mlb ball game for the first time in 6yrs, and took some friends/family along, which was their first ever pro game.

What were some of the highlights?KC Royals Game, july 22, 2006, Royals vs Angels....Angels won, 5-4 in 10 innings(I think!) Two of my brothers, and my sister coming down for the month of july.

What are you still going to squeeze in?clothes that fit....:)

28. Our summer was a good one
In July, hubby and I took a four day bus trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto. We stayed on the Canadian side of the border. I enjoyed walking around the town, standing beside Horseshoe Falls and the Maid of the Mist boat ride. Personally, I would have liked to spent a little more time in Toronto.

Last weekend, we went to Atlantic City, NJ. We played slots at the Bally's casino. Afterwards, hubby and I walked on the Boardwalk and ate lunch. We went out onto the beach. He laid on the beach, I went into the water. That's why I enjoy going to the beach.

Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 01:45 AM by socialdemocrat1981
Did you have a good winter?

Not particularly -there were some good highlights but all in all now

What were some of the highlights?
The youth wing of my political party giving me an award for my involvement in the political process and participating in political activities with that very same youth wing

What are you still going to squeeze in?
Nothing much -perhaps some more creative writing

What are you sorry you missed?
A proper vacation, the opportunity of full time employment, various social functions due to a leg injury I sustained, more fulfillment and happiness with my life

38. Up and down....
This summer we finally got the insurance to pay off on the burned out house and we got rid of the carcass. However, the anxiety of dealing with it was not pretty.

It's been the most drinky summer I've had since I was a teenager, and that's okay. I have enjoyed a great deal of alcohol and had my share of quinine this summer. And possibly your share, too. The mosquitoes were bad this summer. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I found new friends after spending several years not interested in that type of personal relationship.

I worked on an emotionally draining project that didn't pay well, but taught me a lot.... mostly that people who are good with document-detail management should not be allowed to manage people. Micromanagement is unpleasant in a huge way.

We missed the Colorado Shakespeare Festival thanks to a nasty ear infection. However, my garden thrived on the benign neglect.

We saw several decent movies, especially Pirates of the Caribbean II, to which we went in costume. It was great fun. We also saw some utter trash that should have been filler on the cutting room floor.

It was politically stressful and primarily nasty, with no end in sight.

44. It had its ups and downs.
I got to visit someone special, and I'm very glad about that.

But I also found out I'm not quite done with school. I thought I was finished last month but received a letter stating I need two more classes. I've since moved out of my apartment (which was planned already -- my lease was up) and I'm staying with my sister until I can find a roommate. I've enrolled in the two classes, and I had a job interview on Friday. Looks like I'll get it.

So, it could've been better, and it could have been worse.

This took up a lot of my time and energy. Our new area does seem to have a lot of little things going on in the summer so we checked out some of those things.
I regret that I did not go to any amusement parks, swim, or go camping. I suppose that there is still time to go camping. I could still swim outside if I really wanted to and there is a community indoor pool in my new town. Many amusement parks will be open weekends too. The hot to cool change has happened rapidly though.

In August we had a family wedding, then I went on an insane road trip (but I got to meet DUers :D ) and then we moved.

48. Camping by a clear river, watching the kids splash ...
Blueberry picking, and then resting under an enormous oak ...

Walking in a forest draped in moss and ferns ...

Exploring tidepools on the Oregon coast ...

When in Maine, watching my kids catch lightning bugs/fireflies for the first time of their lives (we don't have them on the West Coast) ...

Swimming in hotel pools -- my son is now big enough to give ME a piggyback ride  ...

Dancing with my husband at a World Party concert -- so great to have Karl Wallinger back, and in a small, intimate venue ...

Hearing the kids yell and play with their friends on the court outside after dinner, when it stays light out forever ...

So many things; I could go on and on. I'm very lucky.
