Help!! My child likes Barney on PBS, and he is only 7 months old........
That show freaks me out but my son has a blast, smiles, moves frantically. I am a Sesame street fan myself, he likes that too, especially Elmo.

3. Shoot the TV. It's really, REALLY bad for kids to watch television
at that age.

Not that I want to sound lke a Luddite, but it's true.

I agree with you on the watch TV less thing. We rarely watch the tube ourselves.

I'm NOT being sarcastic here. We've done the kid thing twice.

It is great for brief periods of time. He is totally into it for the period that he can watch. I must admit that Sprout, the PBS station on cable has some decent kids shows.

5. Barney is great for babies. It honestly will teach him good values on his
little level. It's not like power rangers...

Barney is good, wholesome fun for the babies, and some grown up humans could learn a thing or 2 from it as well. *cough*

9. OMG!
You must accept his childish nature. My three kids went through it and have moved beyond into the world of cynicism. In the meantime, goad your child into dancing to one of Barney's tunes. You might as well get some enjoyment out of this! When the time comes to discard Elmo, I have a snuff audio which will accomplish that purpose (IOW, teenagers can be a pleasure!)

10. Yeah, but the best pleasure I get out of my teens
Is popping that Barney-dance home video into the VCR, particularly when gramma or grampa's over....and watching them turn about fifteen shade of pink.

"Groooowing, we do it ev-er-y day,
We're growing when we're sleeping
And even when we play
And as we grow a little older
We can do. more. things.
Because I'm growing,
And so are yoooooou!"

*snorf*

God, I love traumatizing them

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

13. Well, here's a coupla of songs to brighten up the day...
LET'S SEND BARNEY TO JURASSIC PARK
(Tune: "Wrap Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag")
- by Joe Bethancourt

Let's send Barney to Jurassic Park!
He'll die, die, die!
Watch that turkey stumble in the dark
And listen to him cry! (keep smiling!)
What's that final dying squeak I hear?
All that's left is a purple smear!
Let's send Barney to Jurassic Park!
He'll die, die, die!

Let's send Barney to Jurassic Park!
He'll die, die, die!
The sappy little twit will be an easy mark,
So kind and sweet and shy! (and stupid!)
Watch him meet Tyrannosaurus Rex!
Watch ol' Barney get it in the neck!
Let's send Barney to Jurassic Park!
He'll die, die, die!

and.... since we're in the park...

JURASSIC PICNIC
(Tune "Teddy Bear's Picnic")
- by Joe Bethancourt

Don't go out in the Park today, the power's gone off, you know!
Do not go out in the Park today, it's not a place you should go!
Beneath the ferns there's something you'll learn
Play hide and seek, a twist and a turn:
The 'Raptors are out, and they're gonna have
a picnic!

Out in Jurassic Park! It's after dark and we have lost our way!
We are wandering all alone, we wanna go home; that's all we have to say!
There's a rumble in the gloom, so give it lots of room!
It's a Tyrannosaur, and he doesn't want to play!
With lots of teeth and a big appetite
He's stomping around the Park
And YOU might be his first entree!

So...don't go out in the Park today, you'll only wind up as lunch!
The dinosaurs in the Park today will nibble and gobble and crunch!
The 'Raptors hunt in a pack, you know
They're bigger, and meaner, and you're too slow....
They hide in the trees, where nobody sees...
Don't try for your gun, don't bother to run...
They're sneaking around and hunting you down...
They hunt in a bunch; they want you for lunch...
The 'Raptors are out, and they're gonna have
a picnic!

14. My cat, Yogi, likes the Teletubbies and that new
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 03:28 AM by Jamastiene
PBS show with the sloth. I can't remember the name right now. I am usually in classes at college when he watches, but this summer, I actually got to see what my aunt was telling me. He actually likes those shows, especially the Teletubbies. I also introduced him to Sesame Street. He seemed interested for a while, but I could tell he was waiting for Jack Hanna and more importantly Julie Scardena (spelling?) to come on. He loves her. Looks at her like he has a crush on her or something. I forbade any playing of Barney while he is awake and try to turn the television quickly if Barney happens to be on. I wouldn't want my aunt stuck watching Barney. I don't want to get stuck watching Barney at any time either. I am sure Yogi would like Barney, but I have to draw the line somewhere; else wise, Yogi would watch too much tv and become a couch potato,.

16. you don't have to put it on for him
If you're sitting there watching a show with him for half an hour, you can just as easily read him a book in that time. He'll be happy and by the time he remembers barney exists he'll probably be too old for it.

17. Forbiding things to protect your sanity does not make you a bad parent.
In my opinion it's a good idea to set that precedent- more for your own benefit than the baby's- now, before the kid discovers something really awful like :scared: Caillou.

Joy to the World, Barney's Dead
We barbequed his head.
Don't worry 'bout the body, we flushed it down the potty
and around and around and around it goes
and around and around it goes ...

That is the "in" tune for the fifth graders on the bus right now where I live....I was treated to that song after my son's second day of school this year.

21. I guess if you must have a kid under two watching tv...
There are worst things than Barney and Sesame Street. I would recommend the Baby Einstein videos. But please do not ever turn on the teletubbies if you ever want your kid to talk normally. I love sesame street myself, and barney is a freak. But the above poster is right. Barney will teach some good values.

24. I find it annoying also, but...
apparently the show was developed after lots of research regarding the learning patterns of very young children.

As long as the real people around toddlers are speaking "real" language and not baby talk, they will learn to speak properly. Teletubbies took up so little of their waking time anyway.

26. Those "Barney" years were the worst of my life.
I had my only child at age 40 and had very little tolerance for any of those kid shows - but Barney was by far the worst. Horrendously bad acting from a cast of sickeningly saccharine kids, and a purple dinosaur I just wanted to smother with a pillow.

You have my sympathy.

27. When my daughter was seven months old
she used to get tripped out by that Peter Gabriel video on MTV with the dancing chickens - I forget the name of it. If we put something up in front of her face, she'd knock it down with her hand, or if she was playing with a little toy or something, as soon as she'd hear that flute riff at the beginning of the song, she'd turn her attention right to the TV until the thing was over. She was hilarious.
