Contrary to popular belief, the FAFSA does not tell students what their awards are; that is done by the poor schmucks at the schools who have to assess aid based on the school's costs. The FAFSA provides an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). School costs minus the EFC equals financial need.

1) There have been a large number of idiotic changes to the Federal regulations (go figure---:P), and schools have had to scramble to make them work. The poor schmucks that make awards (i.e. the Financial Aid Office staff) have had a nightmare situation this summer to put things into place. 2) If drop/add isn't over yet, they are probably waiting until then to assess your class schedule at that time so they can pay you. Otherwise, they're liable under Federal regulations to return money to the Federal programs on your behalf if you drop out; also, they'd have to chase you down to have you return money if they paid you for more classes than you actually took, and they'd be out a lot of money. If drop/add's over, they may be waiting on lenders to disburse loan funds.

These are the most common reasons for something like that. :)

#2 isn't really an issue here, cause I'm a medical student so my cost of education is extremely prescribed and inflexible. And almost no one drops out of medical school since you would literally never be able to pay back your outstanding loan debt without a doctor's salary.

I wonder if #1 is the case here. I know this is the first academic year where grad students could apply for federal PLUS loans entirely on their own, and a lot of my money is supposed to come through that. Most med schools have safeguard systems in place to loan interest-free money to students to pay their rent and for groceries and so on until loan money comes in, but no dice here, sadly.

The Grad PLUS program is great in theory but a nightmare in practice. Hell, the Feds haven't even changed the Master Promissory Note---it still has the parent section and the student section separately. Technically, those notes are invalid, because the "parent" isn't the borrower. However, until the powers that be (read: FReepers and other assorted Hugh Morans) issue a revised prom note, that'll just have to do. They have schools collect addenda for the notes in the case of Grad PLUS, but that's just a temporary measure (supposedly).

I'm just waiting for the Feds to come back after the schools have worked out all the bugs and say, "Oops, sorry, it didn't work. Too bad. We're not going to continue Grad PLUS after all." :eyes: It's happened before on other programs, and I'm also expecting it to happen to the undergrad Academic Competitiveness Grants and a couple of other programs.

I think it will work out nicely this year. God forbid we see more than one ethnic person in a prime time show :sarcasm: . Prime time television follows such a formula (1-2 token "ethnics") that this kinda tosses it on it's ear. And, given the past Survivor formulas, the teams will combine in a short time and I think they will have a greater ethnic mix in the end days of the game, which is all to the good, in my opinion.

To get the voice up that high, I figured it was some dainty woman who did the voice, like Bart Simpson or Rocky the Squirrel. Then again, I guess Howie Mandel did that character of his (Bobby?) and it sounded like the air squealing out of a baloon.
