5. I know this is a tongue in cheek post
But I've been shaking my head in perplexity over this whole Pluto flap. The whole purpose of science is to continue to refine and enhance knowledge, which is predicated on change as you discover new things. To refuse to acknowledge those changes of perception or knowledge (for instance, those who continue to insist the world is flat even though its been proven to be round) is to reject the whole meaning of scientific discovery.

Change is good, people!

8. Tongue in cheek, yes
about the solar system ... only incidentally

My real intent was to make light of the way some folks here about want to boycot anything at the drop of a hat. :)

I agree...and am smacking my head over this latest turn:

AAAAAARGH!!!

Pluto is one of many minor planets in the Kuiper belt, just like Vesta is one of many minor planets in the asteroid belt. Knowing what we know now, calling Pluto a full-fledged planet comparable to the eight major planets opens an immense can of worms...

12. I think down-grading Pluto does exactly what you call for...
it's scientists reflecting changes of knowledge. When we discovered Pluto in 1930, we didn't realize just how many other Pluto-like obects there were out there. We assumed it was just another planet.

Now that we have knowledge of other Pluto-like objects, we realize that Pluto isn't as significant as we once thought it was. TO reflect this new knowledge, Pluto's status has been down-graded. So, actually, scientists are doing exactly what you want them to. Change is, indeed, good.

14. This is more, I think,
the result of astronomers, astrophysicists and other hooligans running amuck, than it is the result of any unsociable acts by the other planetary bodies. (And, certainly, the sun isn't involved.)

No, it's all because of these starry-eyed -- but gone-wilding -- stargazers, who, together with their running-buddies, the string-theory posse, have been responsible for similar outrages in the past.

And one can't help wondering what's next? Pillaging and looting? Roving murder-gangs made up of quantum-physicists ("Strings made me do it.")? It's just too horrible to contemplate.

Stern measures may be required.
