Ebayers: Do you refuse to buy from sellers who charge extremely high S&H?
I do.

I can't for the life of me figure out why it should cost $12 to ship a single DVD. Or CD. Or book.

This one jerk had the nerve to ask for $25 to ship a DVD set (The Adventures of Superman, Season 2).

1. Yes
I do. They now have a form you can submit to them for people who charge excessive S&H. It's part of what is called "fee avoidance" because eBay takes a percentage of every item it sells, but they don't get a percentage on S&H.

I've gone through listings specifically to find people who do charge more than common sense says they should, and reported them. I doubt if eBay will punish all of them, but it does make me feel a little better that they are starting to look into it.

Here's a link to that info on S&H for you:

2. Yep - I always check the shipping cost, and if they are unreasonable,
I won't bid.

And it is amazing how many unreasonable "shipping and handling charges" people there are. Stunning.

3. Usually, yes
When I sell on eBay, I try to keep shipping costs reasonable. Sometimes you have to take a little extra care when shipping fragile materials (I refunded one customer her full amount because of damage during shipping), but $12 to ship one DVD is ridiculous.

There's padding, and then there's PADDING. That's just being greedy.

4. Yes- except once...
I found THE perfect gift for a person that is impossible to shop for on ebay. After I purchased it, payed the exorbitant shipping/handling, I left feedback basically saying that I had expected a pure silk padded-box for the amount of money that they were charging to ship their goods.

Perhaps that wasn't the best way of handling it, but.. hey, it felt so good to write that! And the person for whom I had bought the thing absolutely LOVED the gift and talks about it to this day!

6. I take that into consideration yes
If the deal is just too good, well, I can't stop myself and will bid, but I always mentally include S/H into what I want to spend.

As a seller, if someone thinks the S/H is too high and say something about it, I will explain what I put into that figure and am usually willing to come down a little if it helps get someone to bid. But that's just me.

7. depends
I always figure s/h into the equation. If the s/h is a little high, but the item is priced very low, I still might bid.

As a seller, I NEVER pad my shipping costs. I do my best to charge actual shipping, plus cost of any special materials I need. I sold a bunch of stuff a couple of years ago and did pass along the cost of the special envelopes I used. I also try to give people the option to ship first class or parcel post if they want to ship things more cheaply.

The shipping you describe above is totally out of line.

9. For sure: I NEVER buy if the S&H is a *mystery*...
Talk about the Wild, Wild West.

I've had many happy purchases from eBay, but I've been burned a lot too.

$65 to ship a PC?

...and you'll NEVER have shipping refunded....

11. Hell Yes
They're using S&H to make more prophet.

Example:

About a six months ago I needed to buy a battery for my IBM laption. Ebay Store #1 and the battery $10 cheaper than anyone but by the time I factored in the shipping charges they were $10 more expensive than anyone else

Ebay Store #2 had the second best price and had one of those shipping calculaters where you would see the exact charge. Ultimately they were the cheapest people selling the battery because their S&H was set at a fair price.

Ironically Ebay Store #1 was somewhere in NJ whereas Ebay Store #2 was shipping from Hong Kong. I even gave Ebay Store #2 a great recommendation saying that even with shipping from overseas they gave very prompt service.

12. no i look at the total price before i bid
if the total price is a bargain, it's a bargain, sometimes the only way to start the bidding is to open w. an unfairly low price and to have a higher shipping charge

if you are seeing unfairly high fees w. a "buy it now," where the seller can set her own price to begin with, by all means report it

but if you were lucky enough to win w. a bid that would cause the seller to lose money without a shipping AND handling fee high enough to cover fees and expenses then i don't see the issue

i wish everyone who complained about shipping price would have to spend a month, just one month, trying to live off what they sold on ebay, it would open your eyes

nobody's getting rich off this except ebay itself and the post office, my profit was pennies per item
