Poll question: Popeye, the movie
I watched it a while back. Today, for some reason, I thought about it, no idea why, probably an ad for "Who Wants to Be A Superhero" and my mind went off on another of its tangents.

Anyway, I was thinking random things, like Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall really nailed the parts of Popeye and Olive Oyl - and that Ray Walston was a great choice for Poopdeck Pappy.

What I'm wondering, were they really? Or did I let the movie influence my memories of the cartoons, and the characters were actually totally different.

3. it is a great film
for all the characters you mentioned and how well they were portrayed, robert altman directing, harry nilsson on the music, not to mention a bit role by mr. dennis franz

an underappreciated movie that's for sure, not to mention robin williams' first feature film

9. I've been a huge Popeye fan since I was small.
It started with the black and white Max Fleischer cartoons, still the best of them all. I think Altman was aiming for that kind of feel. It definitely came through in the way he handled the sound.
Here's a link to the Fleischer Popeye Tribute:

My mother told me his theme was the first song I learned, complete with the "Toot toot!" at the end.

10. Yeah, I loved the Fleischer ones too, there was just something that drew
me to cartoons with such interesting characters .. Popeye, of course - but Olive Oyl, the Goons, and the other off-beat ones like the sea-hag.

13. And you can clearly tell
that the wind and sea sound effects were done by either Max or Dave F. Whooosh sounds.
