The Latest from the Freecycle files AKA "I Want Something for Nothing!"
In my inbox tonight:

"I'm looking for a snowblower for this winter. My husband was in an accident (Rav4 meets schwinn, his schwinn lost) and can't use his right arm, so I'm going to have to shovel this year, and I just don't have the strength to shovel our walk and driveway. I'd really appreciate a snowblower, even if it needs a little work.

I also am looking for an ethernet card and a printer for a computer system I'm putting together for my friend.

I live in Warren and work in Farmington, can pick up anywhere in between or around those cities. Thanks in advance!"

***Of course I have a snowblower just hanging around. :eyes: Ethernet card? No problem. Why doesn't anyone use this to clean house anymore. Sad state of affairs in this country.

1. Ours is pretty good...
Lots of used books, clothes, etc. A lot of people give away salvageables, like doors and windows.

2. We've seen items such as those described in the OP up on
our boards from time to time. We've also given away some larger things ourselves(comp monitors etc...) Free cycle has been a great help since our son was born 20 months ago.

5. Ours, of late, is awful. I love giving things away and it is also how
we got the kitten for my father. But I hate seeing Wanted: Laptop: 3 years old or newer. Wanted: Free or cheap house. Wanted: Tickets to the Sting concert Friday night. It has become a Santa's wishlist for some.

43. our local list has someone asking for heat for the winter!
really! they want someone to come to their house and fill the lp tank!

the group i beling to has also become mostly an "i want" list. i don't have any problem with it, i hope that everyone who has something matches up with someone who needs it, but it seems that some people have rather high expectations for getting free stuff.

3. You'd be amazed at the things people put on Freecycle.
To give AWAY, not just ask for.

Why would you need a snowblower if you're moving to Tampa, for instance? Some people have garage sales and such. Others put them on Freecycle. I love using it.

Don't see what the big deal is.

4. The big deal is, our freecycle here (of which I have been a member
since its inception) I give away lots of stuff. The problem is 8 out of 10 emails are requests for big ticket items. :hi: One experience I guess doesn't define the whole.

I have an old non-working refrigerator in my basement if you know anyone looking for one. I'm sure it could be repaired.

10. I will do that...
We once a gave a dryer away on this list and had the woman call us up and ask if we would come pick it up because it didn't "match" so they bought a new one. I think that was the moment I started losing faith in it.

31. OMG -- you've GOT to be kidding
Take something for free and then ask the donater to come pick it up? I don't THINK so! Once it's gone, it's gone and becomes their responsibility if they don't want it. What nerve.

I see stuff requested all the time and I think wtf? I guess requests like this are not that bad ..

"Something red or black, or orange. Something festive. I had a set that was destroyed..my silverware has all disappeared too.

If anyone has anything like that, a service for 8 would be great

Thank you

15. Are they looking for plates that are orange and black??
That's wild. Wants can be a great thing. I got rid of two bikes that were just lying around because of it. I would have never thought to freecycle them. They weren't in the best shape but they were still ride able. What kills me on this list is the number of wants for big ticket items that we would all love to get for free. :hi:

22. I KNOW you're right! I'll have a couple
of larger items as the house nears completion. A fridge, old but working and a small chest freezer. Freecycle has been better than hauling things to the dump for sure. Old cabinets go fast as does old lumber and such.

14. I don't see too many outrageous requests on my Freecycle.
I joined this past spring, after solemnly vowing to give away all the assorted crap in my basement. I have yet to offer anything, and that is just due to sheer laziness.

I haven't asked for or accepted anything yet either, but I enjoy checking it everyday to see what's out there. I'm amazed at the stuff that people give away.

23. So is Suri's
http://in.news.yahoo.com/060830/139/673pu.html

Washington, Aug 30 (ANI): Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' baby daughter Suri is so famous that a bronze sculpture titled 'Suri's Bronzed Baby Poop' has gone on display Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery - even though the world hasn't yet got a glimpse of what the tiny tot looks like.

As for the artist, well Daniel Edwards, the man behind 'Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston' that depicted a very pregnant and very nude Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug, is also responsible for this idea, after being inspired by the successful children's book 'Everybody Poops'.

In a statement, the Capla Kesting Fine Art, located in Brooklyn's Williamsburg gallery district, said that the idea was partially a 'statement' on modern media, and also the 'absurdity' of coverage TomKat's baby was getting.

19. What's the big deal?
It's worth a shot. And a lot of people get rid of ethernet cards when they upgrade to a new computer that has one installed or switch to using a wirelessnetwork. Somebody might get rid of an old snowblower that needs a new motor in favour of just buying a new one.

24. I guess some miss my point.. When the majority of the emails
are wants (even though the guidelines specifically frown upon it), not to mention wants of big ticket items: cars and even homes are regular "wants", I have a problem with it. Asking for leftover camp fire wood, or a crib, is one thing. Hell, I want a snowblower too. Luckily I have one. Gee, perhaps I should give it away. :hi:

Quite a few of those come through on my mother's Freecycle list too. Wishes for huge, big-ticket items, sometimes even specifying that they be new.

33. Most of ours aren't like that, but this one is:
I go to the gym every day, and am hostage to whatever is on the tvs-
I'd love to be able to listen to my own music instead. Anyone got an
ipod or MP3 player they aren't using?
Thanks!

====================

Right, I'm going to give a way an Ipod. :eyes:

That said, most of the posts are stuff that are reasonable to give away. Lots of the requests are for clothes or moving materials, and there really are lots of people giving stuff away. Our moderators nag us about not being too greedy about what we ask for and making sure our requests are in balance with our offers.
