Any DUers from Tulsa?
I have a gig out there in a few weeks, and will have some time to explore. I think I'm going to bring my 8 year old along, too, so he doesn't get too far behind in school (we homeschool). Any suggestions for places to visit, eat, be entertained, etc?

:hi:

I work in Tulsa. What kind of gig and how long will you be here? PM me if you'd rather discuss all this off the board.

4. The opera...
It'll be an on-and-off schedule. The first run will be rehearsals and performances over the course of 6 days from 9/19-24. I'll most likely bring my son then.

After that I'll have one performance on 10/7, and they'll have me come on the 6th, and performances the following weekend, on the 13th and 15th. Again, they'll most likely want me there the night before. So it looks like I'll have a fair amount of time to do some exploring. :)

6. What kind of things
do you like to do. If you are bringing your son, one of the first things I would recommend is a visit to the Gilcrease Museum for a little fun but educational trip. It's all American art of the old west and Native American art.

Link here: http://www.gilcrease.org/

We would be glad to meet up with you during some of your time here.

10. That looks wonderful!
I'd love for him to get some Native American history and culture...particularly info on the Trail of Tears.

I'd love to meet up with you! I'll pm you when I know more about my schedule.

12. That will be great!
We'll look forward to hooking up with you! There is also another nice art museum, The Philbrook, it may not hold the interest of an 8 year old, but it has beautiful gardens.

I'll try to think of some other ideas in the meantime.

7. Sounds like you would be otherwise engaged
but Cain's Ballroom is one of the more famous things there. And Kings of Leon are playing there on Sept. 22nd. I personally can't wait for that.

20. I'm not sure what my schedule is...
except that the performance times will be evenings and Sunday matinees. I'll have to keep entertainment expenses minimal, though...It's not a huge paying gig. Thanks for the tip, though. I love their homepage...I've always liked Texas Swing... :hi:

2. My sister lives just south of Tulsa
and homeschools my nephew. Unfortunately, she's an evangelical republican. But, I'm sure she can give me some places to visit. One place she liked was the memorial to those killed in the OKC bombing. (OKC's about 1 1 /2 hours away?)

Odd how the world works. I used to live where you do and all my family still does and I live near your sister, apparently!

8. I'm sure we're pretty different homeschoolers...
;-) But any info she might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I found a website for a Geosciences Center that looks promising. He's fascinated with earthquakes, volcanoes, and such...
But ugh! It looks like it's funded by Halliburton! :puke:

it's a pretty safe time of the year. Lizzie and I are pm'ing because my husband and I are ham radio operators and do storm spotting for the weather service on occassion. Such a small world! LOL

16. My husband and I both
have 2 meter rigs in ours. He put them in and it didn't seem too difficult. I bought mine for little over $100 from the ICOM dealer at one of the annual hamfests. Bought my antenna for the car up there on the last visit home at Univeral Radio: http://www.universal-radio.com/

25. When I was a kid, the Woolaroc had
shrunken heads, and each class had heard about them from the older kids, so of course that's what us younger kids always looked forward to seeing. How an Oklahoma oil man came to have shrunken heads in his collection of cultural artifacts is beyond me.

I just googled "shrunken heads" and Woolaroc. I guess I'm not the only person who remembers them.

27. I would guess that taking your son to the Woolaroc
would give him plenty of cool stories to tell his friends when ya'll get back home. It would be awfully difficult for his eight-year-old friends to top, "Hey, I saw shrunken heads!" :yoiks:
