Extremely bizarre phonecall just now.
Long story short, my sister on the other coast went to a psychic. The psychic told her she has three sisters (she does), that one was pregnant with twin girls (one is) but that the pregnancy isn't a good idea (it isn't). The psychic also said that my sister's husband just had a "wakeup call" with respect to his risk-taking, and that an in-law is lucky he's not a paraplegic (her BIL fell off a 50-ft embankment last week... is in a coma and the doctors don't know how he'll be when he wakes up); and finally, the psychic told my sister that one of her sisters is going through a divorce... that would be me, of course. The psychic said that "This sister has a good head on her shoulders. The divorce from this man is the right thing for her. Her husband is not a bad man but has kept her from her life's purpose and she must break away from him." FREAKY! Andrea, my psychic-seeking sister, said she didn't tell the psychic anything before the session started. I'm not a huge believer, but this is very wierd! Strange things are happening to me these past couple of days. It's kind of exciting :)

1. awesome.
strange, but awesome...I'd like to go see this psychic, too. I watch psychic detectives on Court tv all the time. It gets really wild/scary sometimes.

I'm glad she reassured you about things.

3. This particular woman apparently helps the local police.
I don't live anywhere in the area and haven't heard of her. I think I'll google the name, if I can remember it...

5. As I say, I'm not a tremendous believer.
However I am rather impressed by what this particular woman said. I'm not giving all the details because that would mean revealing a lot about my sisters' personal lives. But the accuracy is in the details, and it's uncanny. I respect your skepticism though!

It makes cold reading more difficult, no?

6. True. The thing about my sister and her twins, for example.
The issues with the children are not physical, and not normal "Oh shit I'm having twins" emotional. The psychic pinpointed the situation pretty exactly. Strange.

7. Psychic's (ahem) are
very good body readers. And even though you don't think you're supplying them with information, you truly are, verbally as well as physically. Maybe not to be dismissed entirely, but take it in as mostly entertainment. IMHO.

16. No. She was probably accessing public records on the Internet
about her sister while doing the reading.

People, this stuff is tricks. Cold readers are simply verbal magicians. They are not psychic.

19. They use multiple techniques simultaneously to get info.
Verbal cues prompt you to reveal information about yourself you are not aware you are revealing. They start out broad and vague and get you to confirm specifics. And they do it in a way you don't pick up on while it is happening. My point was that that was ONE technique she could be using, especially since you CAN'T SEE what she is up to. They are well-trained in these techniques. Go to skeptics.com and they will explain how it is done.

26. I have to laugh at that.
The woman somehow knows all my sisters' married names, looks them up, and manages to find information on one sister's state of mind and another's divorce. All of us are in different states, by the way. That, I don't believe. Anyhow, her name is Laurie McQuary, and she's located in Oregon. By googling her I found parts of an interview with her shown on the Biography Channel. I don't know what to believe, but I do believe that there is a lot we don't understand or recognize in this world, and I can't rule out the possibility that some people have certain abilities that I do not.

Anyhow, no point in getting excited. I'm not! I just think it's very interesting. Oh, and P.S. I've been to two psychics in my life. Both of them were frauds and neither of them were able to say anything that wasn't a vague generalization or a guess e.g. "I see you have a brother.... wait, no, it's a sister... maybe more than one?" And one, when I glanced at his bookshelf, "I see you in a room piled high with books." True, I'm in that room now. But it was clear where he got the idea and it was the only thing close to a hit he got during that "reading."

27. No, my sister did see her in person.
But her last reading was over the telephone, several years ago. She called me then, too, because the psychic told her she'd have three kids. They had one and were looking at a divorce. Surprise, they're still married and have three kids. Since then, he's had his 'nads nipped so there will be no more.

24. while its true that they aren't pyschic,
they are very good at reading people, and getting people to lead them in the right direction.

Sometimes, though, they produce amazing results.

Its still a skill

Hey, sweetie.......

Whatever gets you through the days and nights.........

Sounds very interesting to me......

If there's some way for you to keep us updated......would you?

I mean, as to the accuracy (or non) of the psychic's predictions...

Thanks!

10. Sure I'll keep you updated.
I am really wondering if what she says about my BIL is correct. His body was so destroyed by the fall that they've kept him in an induced coma for the last week. They operated on him to repair a tear in his aorta but couldn't do anything else because he was in such critical condition that his body couldn't withstand the stress of more surgery. They will have to remove his spleen and apparently a kidney is crushed, etc. "Shattered like a teacup" is how his injuries were described. Awful. If he recovers, we will all be amazed. If.

12. That is so cool...
Cause I know your life's work is making the men on DU happy....

Seriously...

That is something to hold onto now isn't it...

That your life's work is important and that you don't necessarily need a man around in order to complete...

Of course your life's work could be spawning the anti christ, but let's just take one thing at a time....

13. I haven't spent two minutes pondering what was meant
by my "life's work"! But the confirmation of what I already know, that in this marriage I am not who I was meant to be, was good to hear.

Oh, and I have three children, not one of whom bears any resemblance to the antichrist. Except maybe the littlest one, Henry. :P

14. so, umm, did she find out anything she didn't already know?
'cause if I went to a psychic, I'd want my money back if I just heard a litany of established facts about me and my family...but then again I'm kind of an asshole.

28. That's where the question of her BIL's recovery
will come into play. I'm curious myself. Oh, and if I sound dispassionate about the poor guy, it's because I've never met him.

21. I do think this is scary cool.
A girl I used to work with got her palm read and was told she had a scar on her stomach (she had a scar from a c-section.) She always said they wouldn't tell you anything bad.

29. I believe there is a mixture of intuition,
reading of body language and all that at work in a reading. I also think it's possible that some people have something more than the average person's intuitive skills. Maybe that's what we call psychic ability. It's just fun to ponder.
