52. Him, but more important to me...
the fact that five years after 9-11:

nothing was done to protect, or, since then reimburse the disaster workers who were allowed to work at Ground Zero without protective breathing devices (thanks, Rudy you evil, phony bastard)

and there is no coherent plan for a WTC memorial or reconstruction, despite all the rethug promises.:puke:

Highly recommended: Dear Jesse, a documentary by a gay filmmaker who is also from Union County.

who says gay people deserve to die of AIDS because he doesn't understand anything not spoken in "grumpy hateful old man."

Granted he's not senator any more, the mentality that elected his ass is still alive and well in this godforsaken red state. Btw, did I mention this state is still red.

We (dems/libs/progressives) are trying though. Who knows? Maybe we can turn it blue sometime within the next 10 years, or 100 years.

From a former New Yorker...

Politically, the best that can be said about this area is that it's probably the best in NC (besides Asheville). But that's not saying much.

Great climate, though. Anyway, welcome. I think that there are many Triangle DU'ers.

We send great people to the US Senate but Illinois has had three decades of crappy Governor's. There was a Democrat who went to jail, followed by 26 years of Republicans, and then, even when we finally get a Democrat again, he's kind of an embarrassment.

117. Ah, the shame grows...
I was in Cleveland for the mayor's hairburning on the Cuyahoga/Lucille's bowling night.
I was east of there for The October Surprise.
I was in Dayton for the "Peace" Accord.
I'm now in the capitol for what?...the October Surprise redux?

It's the end of the world as we know it!

Thank heavens for Kid Kucinich, the youngest mayor of a major American city (I knew him when...)
For the Lake Metroparks System.
For the Dayton 90-minute market (Too bad it headed south on I-75).
For a pillow to lay my head because all this CRAP wears me out.

Here's to new beginnings, however they may shape up.

Maybe we will see you on the board more regularly during that time, hope so.

Hmmm...when you live in a town with 24-hour drive-through weddings, a Mafia lawyer for a mayor, and large replicas of the Eiffel Tower, the Giza pyramids, and the Statue of Liberty all within a block or two of each other, it's kinda hard to feel embarrassed about much -- the threshold gets kinda high.

There is always Yucca Mountain, I suppose.

18. Illinois: political corruption.
The pinnacle of which was former a former Republican governor who was actually trading the lives of constituents for campaign money. That's outrageous even by Illinois standards, and we have a really high tolerance for such shenanigans!

I guess I should add Sue Myrick too, for her extramarital affair, her horrible make-up, and her 'these colors don't run' comment.

167. Probably not just the fundies.
If the politics was anything like it was in South Carolina, there were a lot of interesting bedfellows on the lottery issue. I voted against the lottery because I don't think the government should be in the gambling business, and I would rather just deal with regular taxes. And I am not now and never have been a fundie, just opposed to gambling. But, now that SC has a lottery, I don't spend a lot of time worrying about it. It's a lot better than the previous video poker (sometimes referred to as the "crack cocaine" of gambling).

I believe northern NJ should secede from the south. It will save us a lot of embarassment. The south doesn't like us and the north is sure as hell embarassed by them, so it's really for the best.

Meanwhile, the shore can be their own third little state. Even though they're technically south Jersey, they are truly a completely seperate place. One that is far better than south Jersey, even though the shore people don't really like all the Bennies invading their towns.

way down on the list of priorities for the average Californian. There just aren't enough people who take an interest, become informed on the issues, and get involved. I really do think people in this state (especially in So. Cal) are very starstruck - which explains Ahnold.

world extends only to a 6-foot radius around them. Literally, they don't even know or care about what is there or what is happening if it is more then 6 feet away from them. All I see all day long is people trying to parallel park their SUVs while talking on their cell phones - completely oblivious to the fact that they are holding up traffic for an entire block while they are gossiping on the phone and inching carefully into a parking space that isn't large enough for their army tank - and it's all so they can just drop off one baby sock at the dry cleaner.

192. You just described my area perfectly...except the
SUV drivers mostly plow ahead oblivious to the dangers, rather than inch carefully anywhere! One day right in front of the drycleaners (where she was about to drop off that one baby sock), a woman parked her Escalade so close to me that I couldn't get out of my car.

The worst offenders all have kids at my daughter's school. The first day was yesterday and the steady stream of gigantic new SUVs was just appalling. These idiots apparently don't care how much gas costs or how much of it they burn. Absolutely terrifying watching them trying to park those things.

The other night I was sitting in the cafe in Barnes and Noble having a cup of coffee and reading a book. At the next table was a group of moms from school yabbering on and on about designer clothing and "Desperate Housewives." Nothing between any of those ears except stale air.

90. It is perfectly legal to ride in the back of a pickup truck
despite all the inevitable fatalities, moves to change this are always opposed by Neighbor Island residents who, due to the near-total lack of public transportation, have no other way to get to town.

Of course, plenty of O'ahu residents take advantage of the dubious privilege as well.

And:

* Increasing numbers of people, working families included, are being priced out of the housing market by affluent mainlanders who only want a second home for two weeks out of the year; they (the families, not the mainlanders, alas) end up living on the beach, right up until the police run them off in a sweep.

* We still do not fluoridate our drinking water. The nutty guy from Dr. Strangelove must've been from here.

* Public education blows. The well-off can choose from a wide variety of excellent private schools, some dating back to the monarchy era, leaving the DOE schools (one statewide district!) to try to edumacate everybody else. You know it's bad when teachers in the public schools send their own kids to private school!

* The state mental hospital is under a Federal consent decree meant to keep it from being such a snake pit.

* Speaking of snakes, a certain movie is set on a plane that supposedly took off from here, even though we have no snakes in the islands!

Just another shitty day in paradise...

104. Aggie joke time!! (used to live in tejas)
Three Aggies were stumbling home from the bar one night, and decided to try hitchhiking. Two farmers in a pickup come by and "Well, hop on into the back, we'll git ya home!"

The Aggies hop in and settle down to enjoy the wind blowing their hair. As the truck crosses a bridge, the farmer driving has a heart attack and drives through the railing into the water.

Survivors?

Two. The farmer in the passenger seat pulls the other one out of the truck and swims to shore.

How did the Aggies die?

Because they couldn't figure out how to open the tailgate.

New here and glad to be here.

Was embarrassed by the mass transit system spanning (or not) the metro Denver area. However, that now appears to be changing. New line into the tech center in south denver should be up in Nov. 2006. Only another 8 years or so for the east-west line.

Massachusetts is a very liberal state, but the last few governors have all been Repubs. I suppose that's embarassing enough.

Now, when I lived in L.A., it would have been much easier: they elected an idiot for Governor, who did shit, and now he's the most popular choice to be re-elected? That's pretty embarassing!

Oh, wait--that also happened in D.C.--didn't it?

Also: Republican idiots in state legislature mean Portland's once proud urban school district is constantly scrambling to stay viable. We have one of the highest enrollments in public schools of a city (granted, not a huge city) in the nation (I believe it's 75 to 80 percent); however, the tenuous situation always puts it at risk of starting the downward spiral where the more affluent kids are yanked out of public schools and sent into private, people w/ kids move away from the city, etc. etc.

I drive a lot up in CT and they make NJ drivers seem like they use their turn signals all the time. Anyway, the mall rat thing is a phase that everyone in HS goes through. There is generally nothing else to do in suburban NJ for a teenager, except wander around the mall or stand outside smoking & sneering. In my town, it was either that or hang out in the woods or at a playground.
