Why are people from Pluto called Plutonians?

Generally, when the name of a place ends in O, you drop the O and add AN to form the name of its inhabitants. I mean, we don't call people from Colorado "Coloradonians" or people from Mexico "Mexiconians"....what's the deal? Is it just because "Plutans" sounds kind of stupid? :shrug:

I refer to myself as a "Mississipian" and "South Carolinian" and "Ohioan" respectively... but yeah, it's easier to say "Plutan." :P
