$400 for a teeth cleaning and zit poppage?!? AKA Jessie goes to the Vet.
Today, Jessie, the Sheltie Extraordinaire, went to the Vet. She gets sebaceous cysts (dog zits) and one of them had gotten frighteningly huge, so the time had come. She has also been licking her paws to bloody so we needed some medicine ($75 worth) for that. I had no idea that dogs suffer allergies much the same as humans and that it manifests itself often as crazed paw licking.

An appointment was made for today, 8:30. The car ride was Great! Walking in the parking lot was lots of fun! We even enjoyed the door, the desk, the tech who fussed over us!! Woohoo! The vet is fun!

Until we saw the Schnauzer puppy...yes the Schnauzer puppy. The one with the vicious (<<<hey I spelled it right!) big round eyes, and the round, but dangerous, tummy. We felt we needed to wait for the vet underneath the bench, well hidden behind Mama's legs. It hurts to be laughed at for very real fears...like vacuum cleaners, squirrels and dogs that are 1/10th your size...

Luckily, the wait wasn't long...and we LOVE the vet, once we get in the room. We don't love what the vet tells us. It will be 25 bucks a pop (no pun intended) for each zit and "her teeth are gross"...Well what the hell do expect when her idea of a culinary experience is Merlin's litter box? $300 will take care of the teeth..."I mean, look at them..." "I know! they're in my face every morning breathing doggy breath!" :eyes:

Luckily, the tiny, scary Schnauzer was gone when we left...replaced by an iguana that had poor Jess bolting for the door.

Dogs...sigh...I adore mine.

1. We have to feed Ellie the Dog special additive-free (read: expensive) food
because of her allergies, but we really did notice a difference within about a week of making that change. Much less licking and chewing on her legs and paws.

And Ellie is the same - totally intimidated by cats and dogs a fraction of her size.

3. Jessie is on prescription Hill's Canine C/D Dry...
because of the bladder stone issue a few years ago. That was $1,000 to fix. We're wanting to call her the million dollar dog. But, she's worth it. It's just a tad embarassing when she gets cornered by a chihuahau.

5. the estimate for teeth cleaning for my cat was $700

10. Jessie will need to be out for her teeth cleaning too. I think they
knock them all out for safety. Jessie would never bite, but I don't think she would sit still for it. We have a hard enough time with the brush. :hi:

6. Chessie is afraid, no, terrified of the new puppy.
The puppy absolutely goes nuts when she sees her, but Chessie, who outweighs her 15 pounds to 5, couldn't care less. :eyes:

Did the vet mention plastic bowls as a possible cause of acne? My sister-in-law's Schipperke had acne, and after they followed the vet's advice by switching to ceramic bowls, it cleared up. I googled "dog acne + plastic bowls", and it was discussed on a few dog health sites.

13. She gets the cysts all over her body.
currently there is one on her tail, one on her hind quarter and one on her shoulder. She uses metal bowls...but it took a while to get her used to them. :hi:

9. Cocoa's hot spots ran me $170 a couple weeks ago
The vet gave him a corticosteroid injection then said "we need to shave his tallywahcker"

Fortunately his teeth stay clean with chew bones.

14. I think it's the kitty litter that does it for Jessie. We lock her out of
the basement now. her little butt is shaved right now so they could take a sample from the big cyst...she's not happy about it. :D
