Saginaw was once (1870-1890) the largest producer of lumber in the USA. Pine from the Saginaw Valley largely rebuilt Chicago after the Great Fire. If you drive a GM car, the steering components were likely built here. And we are today, outside of Detroit, one of the leading centers for heart, brain and cancer surgery in Michigan.

After the timber was cut down, the Saginaw Valley was converted to farmland. If you order a bowl of bean soup in the cafeteria of the US Capitol, the beans were grown here. This is a little tradition that dates back in 1910 or so when our then-congressman, "Sugar Beet" Joe Fordney (chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee), got it attached to some obscure legislation before that august body.
