Opinion: Ending a relationship is just as hard as being broken up with

The funny thing is, that many of our cultural narratives (songs, movies, books, etc.) don't put a lot of focus on the pain someone goes through when feeling the need to end their time with a partner they genuinely care about.

I've just learned this from firsthand experience unfortunately...

Breaking up is horrendously painful. Don't be in a rush to fill that void with a new person, because sometimes breakups can lead to bigger things.

Be infinitely patient with and kind to yourself. It would not be intelligent, as some posters might suggest, to immediately fill one void with another object of attachment.

Almost, but not quite. You knew it was going to happen and had time to prepare yourself emotionally. She might not have known the relationship was going to end and might feel as though the rug as been pulled out from under her. It's hard to lose someone you have been close to. They have been a part of your life and then, suddenly, that relationship is over. I know that breaking up with someone is really a hard thing to do. But, she might be feeling a little lost right now. It's hard to trust anyone again. And, I'm sure you feel bad. If you didn't feel the same way about her as she felt for you--you did the best thing for both of you. Now, she has the chance to find someone who wants to spend his life loving her, taking care of her, and being good to her. You've given yourself the same chance.
