Reading several long threads of folks that feel bad or left out or some such. Is it the weather or moon phase?

Not trying to ridicule, just seems to be a bunch of "I'm leaving DU" or "I'm thinking of leaving" type threads....

I tend to be in the camp of why post that, just take off for a while, but someone in one of them did make an argument for a possible reason for making an announcement. Still kind of odd to see so many at once, though.

Hope everybody gets what they need/want out of their decisions.

1. this is my thought on the matter:
If you are actually being emotionally affected by an internet message board to the point where you are literally sad-- you need to throw your computer out the window and spend more time outside.

That is all I will say.

11. You mean, use wireless and log on from the patio?
But why throw the computer? That might break it.

14. I was thinking more along the lines of...
...get off the damn computer and spend some time with more people in the RL-- or just by yourself.

2. Well, some are announcing that they're leaving temporarily, others that
they are leaving due to circumstances beyond their control, so that narrows the number down a bit.

I hope I'm not stealing other people's happiness.

6. Well, lend me some. I often feel bad in the Lounge (basically because I
know that I should really be working on something else, and that I'm procrastinating).

12. actually no, most of the "work" revolves around the computer, coding,
scanning, writing documentation, etc. (I'm a developer for a Linux distribution).

thanks for the smile though :)

13. The lounge always makes me feel left out and sad. Sort of like
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 07:54 PM by leeroysphits
an infinite glass wall. I'm allowed to see all the other people and they can see me but we are allowed no contact. Since I'm on one side and everyone else is on the other side it can sometimes feel like being trapped in an inky black well of despair.
But what the hell it's not like there is anything else to do.

18. It wasn't always like this
I know what you are saying. I remember when I first joined DU before the Iraq war started, it was warmer and less abrasive and easier to get a response to your feelings and input. Just know that your posts are probably read and appreciated by many people. I'm touched every day by posts I read here, but I rarely respond to those posts.

16. Maybe it's because it's the First Anniversary of Katrina?
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 07:59 PM by Mike03
It's really weird, but I almost never even come into the Lounge, but I just started again after a long period of not even posting or visiting the Lounge, just because I felt somewhat like a kindered spirit with some of those downbeat posts you may be referring to. Or it could also be the effect of the end of Summer, which adversely affects some of us. Anyway, I'm doing much better this past week, and I hope those others who were experiencing some depression are feeling better as well. It was a year ago during Katrina that I totally changed my sleep cycle, waking up around two or three, and it has been a habit I have not wanted to break because that is a wonderful time to do yoga : - ). But that lack of sleep has probably impacted my mood over the past year, and the whole Katrina anniversary thing means a lot to me. Maybe others as well.

And P.S.

Thanks for asking.

19. Katrina. maybe that is it.
End of summer. Into primary season - pressure to get fired up over politics that have left a lot of disillusionment lately. Hard to be hopeful. Somebody sent me a great e-mail - I am going to post it in a new thread.

20. I am noticing that
but I sure don't want any cred. I don't want to get any standards, you know. I don't mind being left out. It might be the Katrina thing. Everyone is depressed. There seem to be alot of marriages breaking up, and a lot of health problems. I've got some woes but they've been going on so long now it's comical. I pulled such a stunt a few months ago that I'm practically on cloud nine that it looks like I'm not getting sued or anything. I hope I'm not jinxing myself...but I'm feeling a little relief. In three months I'll be hit with another huge problem that will greatly affect my life. As yet I haven't figured out how to forestall that one or fend it off. Right now I'm chillin' though.

26. I like the trivial and idiotic stuff - that is part of the lounge
so I don't mind it on the thread, mostly I ignore the silly stuff - sometimes I get irritated when it takes up 40 out of 43 comments that I might want to read, but mostly I just skim past them.

Just seemed to be a lot mood funk - and I wondered why.

23. If you want to get attention nowadays in DU
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 10:34 PM by Mike03
You probably have to invent a thread topic that says something like, "I'm Jerking Off, Ask Me Anything," or "There's a Bananna Up My Ass, I'll Do Anything You Ask." It's not possible to express or discuss real feelings anymore.

27. A lot of people have had their feelings hurt.
Whether in GD or the Lounge or elsewhere, that seems to be the norm. I have gotten PMs from a few Loungers that broke my heart (and no, I won't tell you who they were or what they were about) from people taking a break because of that.

29. What I think is a real shame....
is when someone posts one of those threads, and they get all kinds of rude responses. When that happens, I'd bet that it's most likely that they will NOT be coming back anytime soon, if at all.

I will also add that in the two years I have been here, I've seen a definite shift in the maturity level. There's a LOT of real nastiness going on, and that's why I'm mostly lurking whenever I do bother to check in.

Thank God for the DU groups.
