I get to make my triumphant, if only brief, return to radio tomorrow
I'm a former Classic Rock DJ in my town and I just had a old colleauge call offering me the prize in a "Be a DJ for a hour" contest. His station cluster just got bought and he fears for his job a little so I think he's bending the rules a bit to get an old vet like me the slot so the contest will go over well with the new bosses. Anyhoo, I'll only be doing a couple talk breaks but I get to program 12 songs of my choice, and I made sure I was clear on this, anything I want regardless of format. Heh. Fool, should know better than to give someone with my eclectic tastes such a challenge. My little town don't know what its in for. Any suggestions? What would your dream radio playlist be?

3. Why don't we get drunk and screw perhaps?
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 11:25 AM by shadowknows69
that's a Buffet song, not an invitation, although I'm sure you're much fun to drink with Ananda. ;-)

6. I can't go too overboard with the protest music
I live in a military town and they WOULD hunt my ass down. "For what its worth" is a possibility but might be too obscure for people. "War Pigs" by Sabbath is definitely on the list.

9. "Masters of War,"...
...either the original by Dylan, or the Eddie Vedder cover on the Dylan 30th Anniversary tribute.

10. They already play a lot of Pearl Jam
so that might be a great choice. Incredible version too, once again proving that everyone else sings Dylan as good if not better than Dylan.

4. What sort of town is it? Do you want to APPEAL to the population
and/or make a political point? Or just help your friend keep his job?

If the Frist boys are listening in, they'd probably love Borat's "Throw the Jew Down the Well" in the line up. On the other hand, if you're targeting reasonable people, "Impeach the President" and "He's an Asshole" are great tunes!

13. Small city Northern New York
I'm torn between wanting to "shock and awe", to use an evil Bushism, and wanting to impress the owners and perhaps score myself a job.

22. Aggh, you were shuffled to the lounge!
You know how you click on a topic that has been moved and the screen pops up that says FUCK YOU--NO TOPIC!!! (Well, it doesn't say THAT, but you get the idea...)

And of course, my first thought is, what ASSHAT crapped on a perfectly nice thread about radio DJs to make it get stripped away? But then, by going back to the main subject of the thread, I found it in the lounge!

Anyway, my humble advice, FWIW, is to IMPRESS. If you get a job, then you can start injecting a bit of "agenda" into your programming.

14. Sara Thomsen
"Is It for Freedom?" from her album Fertile Ground. It was written during the Iraq sanctions in the '90s, but is still appropriate now. And she has a wonderfully rich and beautiful voice. Check out the lyrics:

Is It For Freedom?

Rulers of the nations as you fuss and fight
Over who owns this or that and who has the right
To design, build, sell and store and fire
All the bombs and guns to defend your holy empire

There are children hungry, children sick and dying
There are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers crying
They’re only pawns in your play of power and corruption
Slowly starve them, your new weapon of mass destruction

And prove to me, America, that you care
And prove to me, America, you’re aware
Who’s dying for your freedom in this land
Who pays the cost for the liberties you demand

Is it for freedom, or our comfort and convenience
Is it to profit for big business we pledge our allegiance
Are we prisoners in the land of the brave and the bold?
Held by indifference or hearts grown hard and cold (refrain)

Children of the world, you have the right
To sing and dance, run and play, let your dreams take flight
As the innocent die you rulers carry the shame
And if we stand idly by we share in the blame

And oh, America, do we care
Oh, America, are we aware
Who’s dying for our comfort in this land
Who pays the cost for the convenience we demand?

Children of the world, you have the right
To sing and dance, run and play, let your dreams take flight

20. Do it like Dylan...
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 11:45 AM by madame defarge
His new radio show on XM picks a theme & songs from various artists on that theme. I know you said you had to be careful with the protest songs, but I'm sure you can figure out a way to handle it with kid gloves. This is such a great opportunity to show the current state of our country via music. And since tomorrow is part of the Katrina anniversary, pick a song or two to make sure people realize what we've lost, like "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?"

Here are two links for some ideas on protest songs:

Protest Songs - Post your Favorites http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/25/1364/72449
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_protest_songs

Edited to add: Besides, upstate NY can handle this!
