4. "I'd add more muscle to my wrists."
Um, are you having trouble excercising your wrists? :)

It comes naturally to most guys. :P

7. No, it's not that.
:P

But wrists are mostly tendons and don't build muscle easily, so if you don't have much there to begin with you have a hard time building much. I sometimes think my forearms taper rather alarminingly :(

3. Hiya Prgmom!
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 10:30 AM by ThomCat
1. What was the last song you listened to?
Paris Hilton's new CD. (Don't shoot me. It's actually not bad.)

2. When did you join DU, and why?
Back in 2002. I don't remember how I found DU, but I used to be an activist, volunteer geek and general nuisance back before my disability got out of hand. So DU is the type of place I can get into.

3. What was your most memorable concert experience?
Working backstage at a Bon Jovi concert, assigned to babysit the "Blowjob Committee." (the groupie who hang out backstage to party with the band after the show)

4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet?
You, and a group of other people at DU. If one of us ever inherits a small fortune we have to fly everyone in for one hell of a weekend-long meet-up.

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up?
Um, no.

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years?
None. I don't drive.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person?
No. Definitely not.

8. Did you play an instrument in high school band?
No. I wasn't allowed to learn one.

9. Are you more likely to be late or early?
First thing in the morning I'll probably be late. Mornings are painful. The rest of the day I'll be early.

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?
No. Ten years ago I thought I'd be dead by now.

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?
Every 2 weeks when I'm sleeping alone. More often when I'm not.

12. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Three. Two body pillows, so which ever way I turn I can curl up around one, and one for my head.

13. Do you read in the bathroom?
Sometimes.

14. What's your worst habit?
People who make big pronouncements or judgements without evidence or any kind of back-up piss me off. And I often go out of my way to rip them apart. So I can be argumentative.

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would like to be healthy and unhurt.

Bonus: Listen to everything at least once. You'll find that you love a lot of stuff you never realized you'd love.

1. What was the last song you listened to?

Jean Langlais' Messe solenelle - I suppose the last song was its final movement, obviously the Agnus Dei.

2. When did you join DU, and why?

A couple of years ago now - you looked like such charming folk.

3. What was your most memorable concert experience?

Falling in love with the counter-tenor singing Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare in Egitto a semi-staged performance at last year's proms.

Yes, very much so.

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years?

None.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person?

Exceptionally so.

8. Did you play an instrument in high school band?

No, when I was at prep school (i.e. aged about 10) I was in the school orchestra, but managed to avoid it thereafter.

9. Are you more likely to be late or early?

Always perfectly on-time, which often means fashionably late.

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?

Nowhere near.

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?

Weekly.

12. How many pillows do you sleep with?

13. Do you read in the bathroom?

No.

14. What's your worst habit?

Too many even to begin.

3. What was your most memorable concert experience? Getting to talk to Danny Elfman and the rest of the Oingo Boingo guys when they played a street festival in 1983. The ones of us there who knew who they were had a real treat---they were fantastic and very friendly!

4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet? Katharine Hepburn

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up? Yes. Mom was moreso---Dad loved us but had problems with alcoholism

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years? None. :P Just as sure as I write this, though, my lucky streak will be broken.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person? Sometimes.

9. Are you more likely to be late or early? Late. :P

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed? Weekly.

13. Do you read in the bathroom? No.

14. What's your worst habit? Procrastination.

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be? My legs. I'd like them to be longer. (I'm OK with what I have---but if I could, that's what I'd change.)

****bonus: Please recommend a band or artist you think other DUers might dig. If DUers never paid any attention to the English Beat in the past, they should now. :)

9. Are you more likely to be late or early?

Late, because my parents are always late. But I'm a tardy person anyhow.

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?

Uh....Yeah. When I was about five, I saw myself in high school. :P :P

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?

The cleaning lady does it every week. :D

12. How many pillows do you sleep with?

Two.

13. Do you read in the bathroom?

Hell yes. :P

14. What's your worst habit?

Being a reclusive hermit.

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

21. Answers
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 11:06 AM by socialdemocrat1981
1. What was the last song you listened to?
Off the top of my head, it was probably either “Piano Man” by Billy Joel or “Master of the House” from the musical Les Miserable
2. When did you join DU, and why?
I joined in early to mid 2002. I had become profoundly disillusioned with the * Administration’s handling of the aftermath of 9/11 and had been searching the web for liberal alternatives unsuccessfully. Some sites which had previously had a liberal ideology or were opened up to support Al Gore had shut down in the aftermath of 9/11 or incredulously some of the webmasters who operated those sites were now supporting *. I began to seriously wonder whether left wing thought on the web was dead. Then one day I found myself sick of all the trashing of Bill Clinton that was going on –I have loved his presidency beyond what words could ever adequately begin to convey –so I typed in a Google search engine “Bill Clinton was the best President ever”. It came up with a website which unfortunately I can no longer find which linked me to DU. It had the liberal/progressive ideology I was looking for and a really supportive online community so I joined
3. What was your most memorable concert experience?
Probably seeing Don McLean in concert –he was and is my favorite artist
4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet?
My great uncle and namesake who perished in WW1 –he was my paternal grandfather’s favorite brother. I wish I had gotten to know my paternal grandfather much better –we lived in different countries and I only saw him two or three times in my life. Sadly he passed away just 10 days before we were due to move to his country permanently.

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up?
Yes largely and I am both thankful and grateful for that
6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years?
None
7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person?
Yes, I guess. I’m depressed about my life situation at the moment but at the same time I have a loving and supportive immediate and extended family, the basic essentials of life, have had an opportunity to travel extensively and I have a great group of friends and a supportive and welcoming Church community.
8. Did you play an instrument in high school band?
No, although I briefly played the keyboard and recorder in high school due to mandatory music courses
9. Are you more likely to be late or early?
Late –although I’m trying to change that
10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?
Not at all and that depresses me.
11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?
I’ve let it go the past few days but usually every 2 weeks
12. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Two
13. Do you read in the bathroom?
No, quite frankly I could never understand the attraction of doing that. To each his or her own I guess
14. What's your worst habit?
Procrastination and too much self-criticism
15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My success at finding true love, my appearance and my motivation

26. my answers
1. What was the last song you listened to? Right now: "Things Happen" by Kirsty MacColl. I adore her.

2. When did you join DU, and why? The week after the '04 elections. My good friend 1gobluedem had been sending me links for awhile. I decided I could use some contact with some articulate, passionate liberals.

3. What was your most memorable concert experience? I've been so lucky in my life with my musical experiences. Some moments that stand out include seeing Beck on the Midnight Vultures tour, Miles Davis on the Tutu tour, the AMAZING Caetano Veloso concert I saw a few years ago, Leontyne Price (who gave us about 45 minutes of encores), Sweet Honey In The Rock, the night I saw Billy Childish and Thee Headcoats in a basement club and then went upstairs to see Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson on the Velvet Rope tour, the amazing Tina Turner, Al Green performing to a very small but enthusiastic crowd in the pouring rain at the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival, Carmen McRae singing the music of Thelonious Monk, MeShell Ndegeocello touring behind her first record, Kirsty MacColl touring with her Electric Landlady record, and my bizarre experience of being onstage with Sting, and sharing a mic with him while we sang "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free".

4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet? I have a long list. The one that springs to mind immediately is Billie Holiday.

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up? Yes. Especially my mother. She's possibly the most loving person I have ever met. I always knew that no matter WHAT, she would always be there for me. I realize now just how lucky I was (and am). It's my goal as a mother to try to live up to my mother's example.

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years? I think it's been 14 years since my first (and so far only) speeding ticket.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person? Yes. I can't believe how fortunate I have been in my life. And I count my blessings every day.

8. Did you play an instrument in high school band? I played flute from 5th grade to 10th grade, then switched to tenor saxophone so I could play in the jazz band.

9. Are you more likely to be late or early? I have always been one of those terribly late people, and hated myself for it. I'm with someone who is really good about not being late now, though, and am slowly getting better about it. My friends are all amazed at the change. :)

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago? 10 years ago I was about to marry progdad. So, in that regard, no. He and I split up late last fall, but we're even better friends than we were a year ago...so once again, I am incredibly lucky.

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed? Every week or so, I think.

12. How many pillows do you sleep with? I used to sleep with two or more, but now I sleep with one kick-ass memory foam pillow.

13. Do you read in the bathroom? Yes. I blushingly admit that I do a lot of reading in the bathroom.

14. What's your worst habit? I get too caught up in being in on the in-joke. It's something I've been trying to work on. :(

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I have a myriad of personality flaws, but try to work on those...and I wouldn't want to just suddenly become a nicer person without having the growth experiences to go with that. So my answer will be much more vain - I wish I was thinner. I would really like to be the weight I was 10 years ago. Marriage and motherhood have really packed on the pounds. I'd be happy if I could wake up and have all that fat go away and be replaced by the toned muscles I worked so hard to get a decade ago.

And for bands - check out Aberfeldy if you like sweet indie-pop. "Young Forever" is a good record.
Of course, if you've never listened to Kirsty MacColl or Sam Phillips, you have to check them out too. Two brilliantly witty lyricists.

41. If you must know, and I gather you must...
1. What was the last song you listened to?

"Living on a Thin Line," by The Kinks. It ran in the credits of a Sopranos episode I watched on DVD last night.

2. When did you join DU, and why?

About a week ago. I joined it to learn more about politics and to be able to debate better. I know some Republicans but don't always feel equipped to fight back when they get in my face trying to convince me of their points.

3. What was your most memorable concert experience?

Roger Waters performing "The Wall" in Berlin. Not a good experience, mind you, but certainly the most memorable.

4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet?

From the male pig point of view, I've always had a rabid case of the hots for Diane Lane. If you mean a meeting where I could sit down with the person and ask questions, probably Bill Clinton. If the question means "just to be able to say I met the person and shook hands," nobody comes to mind - I really don't care about stuff like that.

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up?

Not so much.

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years?

None.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person?

Not especially lucky or unlucky. I'm pretty much where the effort I've invested in life has put me - nowhere special, nowhere bad.

8. Did you play an instrument in high school band?

No.

9. Are you more likely to be late or early?

For work, early. For social occasions, late - and usually intentionally.

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?

Pretty much.

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?

Weekly.

12. How many pillows do you sleep with?

Two.

13. Do you read in the bathroom?

Like a professional reviewer, yes.

14. What's your worst habit?

Biting my nails.

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I'd give myself 20/20 vision or better. Compared to the norm, my eyesight is awful.

****bonus: Please recommend a band or artist you think other DUers might dig.

The Good Rats.

I joined in April but didn't start posting in the forums until later. The day I started posting is when I consider myself to have lost my DU virginity.

54. Okie dokie...
1. What was the last song you listened to?

"Life is Hard, But Life is Hardest When You're Dumb," the Austin Lounge Lizards.

2. When did you join DU, and why?

Just before the 2004 elections, at DUer grasswire's urging. Seemed like a place to hang with people who aren't stupid. :D

3. What was your most memorable concert experience?

Mmmm... my first one, I guess — Rare Earth, Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie) and a really good local band, Snail, in 1973. I was amazed because people were drinking and smoking dope openly. (It was at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, in the same arena where Janis and Jimi and the Who and so many other immortals had performed just six years earlier at Monterey Pop.)

4. Whom do you wish you had had an opportunity to meet?

What, like in history? Probably Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay. I'd love to know his feelings about dropping the first atomic bomb.

5. Did you have supportive parents when you were growing up?

Next question...

6. How many tickets (speeding or other violations) have you gotten in the past 5 years?

None.

7. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person?

No more or less than anyone else.

8. Did you play an instrument in high school band?

Voice. But we called it "choir." :D

9. Are you more likely to be late or early?

Neither. I have this weird affinity with time. If I'm late or early, it's by a couple of minutes.

10. Are you where you thought you would be when you imagined yourself 10 years ago?

Next question...

11. How often do you change the sheets on your bed?

Change 'em into what?

12. How many pillows do you sleep with?

Two. One's a neck pillow.

13. Do you read in the bathroom?

Not while showering. Otherwise, yes.

14. What's your worst habit?

Staying up too damned late. x(

15. If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I'd make the voices in my head STFU.

****bonus: Please recommend a band or artist you think other DUers might dig.
