Time for another what music are you listening to thread
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 01:51 AM by mvd
I've been pretty busy the last few days. Listened to these CDs that I own:

Amy Millan - Honey From The Tombs (It has lovely melodies, and a few alternative tunes add variety. More of a folk album than a country album. Maybe not quite as good as her work with Stars, but highly recommended!)

Joanna - This Crazy Life (solid debut with great vocals; recommended - and good news for my crush on her - I saw a couple pictures from where she performed at a Howard Dean rally)

Jennifer O'Connor - Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars (channels Liz Phair's directness and grit, with an enjoyable pop touch - highly recommended!)

Blackhawk - self-titled (they were a 90s country band that sounds just as good after all this time. Recommended for country fans!)

Heard these that I don't own:

Lillix - Inside The Hollow (heard at MuchMusic.com - definitely one of the albums of the year! They've broken free from the formula of their debut to produce something great! I'll be trying to order the import.)

Jessica Simpson - A Public Affair (Not a fan at all. I thought the CD would be an F after hearing the song of the same name, but there are a couple fun tracks. Still, "Let Him Fly" shows the deficiency of her vocals - it can't touch the Dixie Chicks' version. She doesn't have Christina's voice, even though Christina still doesn't use her voice well. CD is not recommended - a C-, in fact.)

Listening to Pete Yorn's CD Nightcrawler right now. So far, so good!

Heard samples from:

The Randies (very impressed!)

Bob Dylan's Modern Times (I bought the CD based on his name; even though his voice has deteriorated, it just makes his modern music even more real.)

4. I still need to see the movie
Haven't bought a soundtrack in a long time. Once I see the movie, I guess I'll know if I want it. :hi:

It's the next movie I'll watch after V for Vendetta, which has the always great Natalie Portman. As you might know, I'm much more of a music person than a movie person, so it might take a while to see it. :hi:

5. Alexisonfire and Cursive both released new albums last week.
Been listening to the Alexisonfire album (Crisis) far more than I should, but god damn, it's just so addictive. Been listening incessantly for the past two or three weeks.

Haven't listened to the Cursive album (Happy Hollow) as much as I should, but it is also quite great.

I also checked out the boysetsfire dvd recently, which is quite impressive. Always nice to see a band as awesome live as they are in the studio.

12. Cursive sounds like a neat band
They do political stuff, don't they? Never too much of good liberal politics in these days.

I think I like the Amy Millan CD more than you would (even though you like Stars,) but I'd try it out at least. I think most of the country comparisons come from some of the titles and themes. Musically, it's not more country than most alt-country and some folk.

20. "Happy Hollow" has some political themes, yeah.
They're great. I'd recommend their older stuff too. "The Ugly Organ" is one of my favourite albums, and "Domestica" is quite good as well.

8. in the last week 3 albums and a single...
"Voyage Of The Acolyte" by Steve Hackett

"Please Don't Touch" also by Steve Hackett

"Sticky Fingers" Rolling Stones

and the single "A Little Trip To Heaven (On The Wings Of Your Love) by Tom Waits. This song is tied for the "First Dance" at our up-coming wedding with "A Remark You Made" by Weather Report. We love both- but we'll figure it out.

17. I finished the album late last night
It's more poppy than musicforthemorningafter, but in a power pop way - I recommend it just as much. I can't buy more CDs right now, but I added it to my wish list. :-)

19. Slayer - Christ Illusion
Proof that 40-something metalheads can still rock. They're the only 80s-90s era band that can reliably bring the noise. The new disk kicks major ass, if you're into that kind of stuff.

Bob Dylan's Modern Times. The lyrics are what we'd expect from Dylan. Very vibrant for his age. Some songs really get back to his folk roots, while others are among his bluesiest. A couple of the bluesy songs, like "Thunder On The Mountain" are a bit bland, I have to say. But generally, he's quite successful in recreating Southern blues for our times. Vocally, he remains worn out - but it works, though it struggles with the length of the songs. Grade: A- - I'm glad I bought it!

Also heard some songs from Thea Gilmore's new one, Harpo's Ghost - definitely sounds like it lives up to her CD Avalanche!
