What are your feelings about the Ignore feature?
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 12:35 AM by bicentennial_baby
I'm curious....Do you like it, love it, hate it? Indifferent? Hmmmm?

Me, I have a very few people on ingnore...People who have me on ignore seem to do it as soon as they send me an offensive PM...I don't really care though. :boring:

So, how do you feel about it? :)

something nasty. I then take them off of ignore after 3 days or so. I've probably done that about seven times since I've been here.

4. I used to only have one person on it.
Everyone else had been tombstoned. Yesterday, that list went up to four. On one hand, it blocks out the harassment, but also I get curious about what they're saying. Plus, if it's a regular poster then it can make some threads confusing to read with all the ignored messages.

If you predict a newbie will be tombstoned, put them on your "buddy" list". Then you can easily access his/her profile.

It can be extremely frustrating to open a thread and see a long list of "ignored" placeholders. Sometimes I'm tempted to log-out to see what I'm missing, but not very often so it's easy to resist the temptation. (At first I'd "peek" but quickly found out that it wasn't worth the effort.) :hi:

One of the beauties of spirited debate is that I get to read all of it, even the stuff--and the people--who piss me off. It's all part of the package, and it's kind of cheating to selectively exclude somebody.

Someone else brought this up earlier, and I said I am new hear, so maybe I'm on a lot of ignores. I don't know the people here all that well yet. I may come off the wrong way,

people are reading words, there is no face to face contact to really know when someone is being funny, sarcastic, serious, or the depth of their post.

when some one jumps on me on any message board, I chalk it up to them being just as wrong off the path as they accused me of. They really don't know me.

Now I will nervously wait and see if you reply.

Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 03:04 AM by quantessd
More than you do, I'd bet.

I think that being uncomfortable is an asset sometimes. People sit around feeling comfortable, and they don't get startled to action until they feel some inkling to change their predictable paths, in this case, because my words made someone uncomfortable.
So if it was my words that made anyone uncomfortable, probably not, but, if so, I accept full responsibility!

I'm just me, and that's that. I can do a lot more of the same.

Anyone who put me on ignore is a silly twit, and that's still okay, I will give them distance.

I don't want to find myself banned over someone who really isn't worth it. Hide thread? Now that's a function I adore. Especially when things get hot in GD. On a multifaceted forum someone could be a blast in the Lounge even if they differed with you on some poltical issues.

Ignore is incomparably weak, IMO. But I'm sure I'm on many ignore lists since I think the 2004 exit polls were nonsense and Bush actually won that one, as opposed to 2000. If we spent 10% of the time and energy battling the very real and widespread low tech vote suppression as opposed to fretting over Diebold, I guarantee we'd be in far superior shape this November and heading to 2008.

39. I like the Ignore feature...
I don't use it for threads since in order to know that I want to ignore a thread or post I have to actually read it first, or see it in the "latest" section at which point the damage is already done. Which is why I find it laughable that when people complain legitimately about the space taken up by ridiculous amounts of new posts/threads on the same topic or recurring annoying idiotic topics (ie. "OMG TWEETY IS BEING SUCH A BUSHCO SHILL WHORE!!!!")and people's brilliant response is "Well just click the ignore button on that thread!!". Uh....I have to actually see or read the thread in order to know I want to ignore it so what the fuck is the point of that? Once I'm annoyed I'm smart enough to not go back to it in the first place.

But using it for particular posters who repeatedly take the same exact positions on every single topic and who react horribly and nastily to any form of dissent or disagreement is something I'm all in favor of. I don't have a long list, maybe under a dozen people. But it's helpful. Often times if I see the "ignored" in a thread I'll wonder who it is but not what they're saying since the reason they are on ignore is likely that they say the same goddamned things every single time.

43. I love it! I use it sparingly but I do use it!

Currently I have only 2 DUers on ignore.
One doesn't like my smilies and I don't wish to offend the person so rather than risk that ignore is a better choice. The other DUer has always acted antagonistically toward me (and lots of DUers, it's nothing personal) and I'd rather not have my blood boil when ignore is a better choice.

BTW ~ I would never never hit_and_run with a pm. That's the coward's way - avoiding a rebuttal because it might shake their unjustifiable confusion about proper and courteous behavior.

<< One doesn't like my smilies and I don't wish to offend the person so rather than risk that ignore is a better choice. >>

I'm not sure what this accomplishes. The person you're ignoring can still see you (and read your messages, and see your smilies).

Although that's an interesting concept---a a reverse-ignore option that would make yourself "invisible" to someone. I guess it would be called a "cloak" option if such a thing existed.

62. Oh... I Understand What You Mean Now...
... but I don't really see how this should be any sort of "temptation" for you to avoid. It seems to me that if someone has a problem with your over-use of smilies then that's THEIR problem and not yours.

And, it could also be that this person felt that way at one time, but doesn't now. Maybe they were in a bad mood for some reason. Again, their problem to deal with, not yours. (For example, there was a time when I really really really hated the popcorn guy. Now he just annoys me a little. Some day I might even like him.)

I know that I've had a certain person complain about my laughing Calvin & Hobbes graphic... but that doesn't keep me from using it. It's her/his problem to deal with. Why should I go through any special efforts to accommodate someone's dislike of my graphics?

55. i used it once for a day
i think it's a bit cowardly actually

i mean, what people actually fear are not those they ignore, but themselves

they fear their own personal reactions to a poster & rather than deal with whatever happens in their psyche when they see a particular poster, they ignore

i don't see why it's so difficult just to avoid people or know how to step aside when someone comes at you in a bad way

and if someone *really* feels the need to fight it out with someone, then do it - as long as your heart's in the right place

that's all

65. I ignore that feature.

67. I sometimes use it to keep *myself* out of trouble.

I may not always agree, but I respect the opinions of others no matter how obnoxiously they may voice them.
