The Emmys: Who the Fuck Cares?
I mean, seriously. Outside of industry people, does anybody actually give a shit who wins the award for "least terrible actress" or "most engagingly cliché-ridden script"? Am I missing something here?

11. My wife loves all the awards shows
They remind me of masturbation.

First I'll give you an award and then you can give me an award. And we'll all be glamorous.

Similar thing happens in academia where a professor will award a neighboring professor with a distinguished award and then the awardee turns around and awards the original grantor his own distinguished award.

A circle jerk.

48. The time lag makes a problem for me on the West Coast.
Comcast delays the broadcast until 8 PM Pacific Time. That's 11 PM Eastern Time when the whole thing is almost OVER.

That's three hours late -- by then, I usually know the major winners and it's a done deal.

I didn't watch last night -- we're not big TV fans anyway. However, I wanted Helen Mirren to win for "Elizabeth I" -- haven't even had time to fully look at the winners.

No loss to me.

41. Most of us work for money or other of life's necessities
even if we love our work and even if the essence of our work is altruistic or beneficial to the community, the world, life, the universe, and everything. And if we get recognized for some of our work, even if imperfectly, good for us.

Yes, some actors, musicians, etc, get paid a lot. Some undoubtedly earn out of all proportion to their talent relative to their peers. But that's the way it is across the board, in the entire spectrum of gainful employment. Does a CEO really deserve a thousand times more than one of their employees? Do baseball players really earn the equivalent of some average dude's entire lifetime income within a few years of playing with their balls? They don't even run the same risk of injury as football players nor use anywhere near the energy of a basketball player but, hey, if they can make a brazillion dollars for playing their game and spitting all the time (disgusting pigs) then, so what...good for them.

If I keep it going consistently (this being very much not a given), I can make at least twice as much in a year through dressing up as Elvis Presley for a few hours nightly (typically four to five of actual earning work) than I would putting my PhD to use (and working day and night while hustling for grants and publishing or perishing) as an Assistant Professor at a major US research university. Do I feel bad about that? Well, I feel bad that education is so vastly undervalued in this country and that people who spend their whole lives in school (I escaped at age 36, for example) and try to help the world out have trouble making ends meet but hell, no, I don't feel bad that I've got six-figure potential from playing dress-up. Not only have I paid my f***ing dues, well and truly but -- even if I hadn't -- I wouldn't be out flagellating myself with birch twigs because I felt unworthy of an outsized income. I work hard for it, too. And even if my actual contact-time work is not full-time, I'm 'Elvis' all day to the people who see me, wherever I go. On top of that, almost all my time off -- when not tired or asleep -- is devoted to attending to my work wardrobe, look, sound, etc. I worked almost around the clock in service to Science and, really, in that respect this isn't much different.

Same with the original stars. Sometimes their complaints seem ridiculous, especially considering the money they make (and let's not forget that most actors and musicians are not making much money at all) and how pampered they can be, but it's not easy being an actor or a musician. These people face brutal hours, much of the time, and often poor working conditions and demands...and, of course, the whole point is that, as with pro sports, not everyone can do it. Being a 'celebrity,' on top of actually acting or playing music or singing, can be hell. As a celebrity impersonator, even, I can testify that even just pretending to be a celebrity who is no longer physically alive very much has its downside (and its upside, of course) and it's a downside most people need never worry about. Yeah, Tom Cruise may be a nutcase, but you try being in his shoes for a week and (uness you'd do what Marlon Brando and I would do, given that week, which is to head out to a deserted island and avoid it all) I bet you'd find being a famous person is hardly entirely a joyride. You can only get so much from spending money, or being seated at the best table, for so long, and then the core of what it is to be famous hits home and stays as long as you're in the limelight.

Famous entertainment types may make a lot of money, but they don't exactly get a free ride (the burgeoning number of Paris-Hilton types and 'reality'-show-alumni do, however, these days come close).

21. I guess I'm one
But then, TV has always been my life, either in reality or fantasy. I love the Emmys, even more than I love the Oscars. I recognize people I've worked with or know, I can cheer them on, and I can cry when someone I cared for is gone.

But I enjoy watching, regardless. It's all a put-on, but it's a fun put-on. And on some occasions, I fantasize about getting up there and accepting my own award someday.

And apparently some of the shun-all-popular-culture DUers are quite self-righteous.

36. Maybe if I actually watched TV in the past year, I'd care
Then again...no. I lost interest in all of the awards shows over the years, just because they (mostly) got too boring and too full of themselves. I saw the Oscars last year, though, and thought Chris Rock got in a couple of good ones...or maybe that was the year before. Whichever, the presenters can be good and the shows usually have good moments, but there's inevitably too much dreck.

I don't have contempt for the shows or whoever watches them (it's been me, before, and may be again), I just can't be bothered watching them myself -- I don't even see good TV shows, these days, and there're several shows I'd rather be watching than any awards show. I only watched that Chris Rock thing 'cos a relative wanted me to watch it with her (and I've before fast-forwarded through tapes of the Oscars just to see Billy Crystal's moments). And, yeah, there IS that whole thing about the major awards shows being shams in many ways, but -- although that hardly makes me enamored of them -- I can't say that disturbs me too deeply because anyone even on the fringe of the Hollywood entertainment machine knows that in many ways it's all as fake as much else thereabouts, anyway.

For some of my family members, any of the awards shows relevant to entertainment fields they work in (which means pretty much all of them in music, TV, and film) are like religious occasions and the day of their broadcast is like a holy day. Although these people pretty much live on the phone, day and night, heaven help the person who dares to call during the Grammys or whatever.

I don't think there is a better character ANYWHERE on Entourage than Jeremy Pivan's Ari Gold on "Entourage". I flipped over from the Emmy's to watch the season finale of "Entourage" and boy did they end it with a bang.

Jeremy ROCKS and he so deserved that Emmy!
